About the Author
Dr Petunia Lee is not the sort of doctor that prescribes antibiotics. She has a PhD in Business Studies, from the University of South Australia, specialising in the science of Human Motivation in organisations. For years, Dr Lee researched and consulted in the field of Human Motivation. However, in 2010, Dr Lee stopped consulting altogether. She stopped helping managers to motivate staff and threw her all into motivating her son. She pulled an apathetic Little Boy out of his depths of low self-esteem and academic disinterest and transformed him into a self-motivated tween. In the process, Dr Lee discovered that many of the strategies she was teaching managers could be used on children too. She thus began a new life as a Motivation Coach teaching parents how to ignite internal drive in their children. Since then, she has used the set of strategies successfully on more than thirty pairs of parents and children. She is an avid blogger. Handy guide for parents
By Lin
I very much recommend this book for parents of preschool to primary school-going ages who recognise that education is a journey we undertake with our children in their younger years. And that it need not be a stressful, angry, traumatic one. Dr Lee draws from her research in motivation studies, work of motivation experts, and from her own experiences in consulting, education and motherhood, and has adapted these strategies specifically for younger Singapore school-going children in very gentle, practical and applicable ways. Although the context is Singapore, I believe this book would be useful anywhere the school system views parents as partners in education. Don't be daunted by some of the more technical-sounding chapter titles. Each chapter is filled with personal anecdotes, some amusing, others endearing, together with lots of practical examples, making it altogether an easy and enjoyable read. I very much appreciate the emphasis on Emotional Connection throughout the book, whichever strategy is being applied. This constantly reminds us that, ultimately, what matters most is the bond we have with our child, not the grade in his report card. I also strongly recommend that parents read all the way to the Last Chapter which ties everything together, and to have the book at hand at least until kids go on to secondary school, so that you can refer to it at different stages of their education. Some strategies are applied differently as children grow. I have just read it a second time and discovered more areas for application than when I first read it 2 years ago!

To be honest, I have never thought of using a structured method to motivate a child to study in primary school. Perhaps the primary school environment where I came from was too relax, or the pace of education in Singapore is so fast it keeps parents constantly on their nerves. But in anyway, I felt supported when I finished reading this book. The author has a background in human psychology, and the several motivation strategies recommended in the book have been “field tested” with many kids around her. A mummy can easily relate herself with some of the anecdotes presented in the book, for example a simple touch from mummy would relieve the child’s stress from a hectic school day. What I like most about the book is that after reading it, a mummy can have an assurance that with a lot of love and a smart way to interact with the child, wonders can happen in both child-mother relationship and the perception of the child on school work.

A must-read if you desire your child to realise his/her potential!
By Pow Wai Cheng
This book is a definite 5 stars for me if only because the reminder that the journey from "being forced to study" to "wanting to study" begins with a strong "emotional umbilical cord" between the parent and child.
It is so easy to be swept along by the pressure for academic excellence. Even with the best intentions, the parent-child relationship can be undermined when one emphasises on task and results rather than fundamentals and process.
As organisation and planning does not come naturally to me, the chapter that most challenged and inspired me is that in which the author explains the HOW to focus on the study process, and not simply on the grades. Indeed, precious is the epiphany I received in her explanation of "One feels a sense of progression when focusing on process because process skills get better with practice", and that "the sense of making progress is motivating in itself". I promise myself I MUST help my children see and live this paradigm. Indeed, the author pens it best in "When children and parent know that something specific can be changed in the study process in order to get better results, they begin to hope again. Hope motivates." Speaking from personal experience, it is when the child loses hope in an academic subject (Chinese!) that he loses all motivation to put in any effort.
Going further, the author brings the reader through a pilgrimage of "...how focusing on process helps the child stay resilient in the face of disappointment, and motivates the child to be persistent"; going beyond grades and into "impossible goals" through the building of character.
Lastly, I love the way illuminating anecdotes are woven through the lively and personable narrative. It is a fun and pleasurable read, even as it is poignant and paradigm changing.
My one grouse about this book is - it contains so many precious nuggets for refining both perspective and application that practice (for me) lags behind my cognitive resonance. I am now re-reading the book and am inspired anew even as I am but two thirds done!
