Fine writing, rich vision, sharp eye for detail

This is a lovely, heartfelt, scrupulously honest book that, while focused on the vibrant, striving Africa our media ignore (until tragedy strikes), ranges in its settings from generations of wrenching change--wistfully recounted--in northern New Jersey's hard streets (Springsteen-with-spaghetti meets black activisim) to the resilient spirit of African writers and poets who are determined to create in their own languages in their reborn states. But all of poet Charles Cantalupo's many journeys into what emerges as an African "Heart of Brightness" reveal not only a life-affirming "hidden" Afica (hidden only because we choose not to see it), but the inspiring evolution of a white American fighting to help his fellow word-wizards without the least condescension. Ultimately, it's Cantalupo's integrity (as man and writer) and open sensibility that make this book work so well. He brings to bear a poet's eye and ear for the details that spark life up from the page, and his paragraphs truly do transport you to the war-weathered art-deco treasures of Asmara, to the raw highlands and thorn-spiked deserts, through first encounters with an Africa that can, indeed, seem "other" to the unprepared visitor, to a genuine understanding and profound emotional bond with an Africa at once particular and universal. So...this is a book of finely described physical journeys, but also of a good man's spiritual journey. It is, simply, a wonderful book about life.

The International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG) is a nonprofit, member-governed organization. The mission of IFPUG is to be a recognized leader in promoting and encouraging the effective management of application software development and maintenance activities through the use of Function Point Analysis (FPA) and other software measurement techniques. IFPUG endorses FPA as its standard methodology for software functional sizing. In support of this, IFPUG maintains the Function Point Counting Practices Manual (CPM), the recognized industry standard for FPA. In order to complement the functional aspect of measuring software size, in 2011 the Assessment Practices Manual (APM) was released by IFPUG. The APM provides a quantifiable measure for the non-functional size of software development by means of documented guidance, definitions, and practices about non-functional software features and related sizing criteria. The chapter within this book titled "Software Non-functional Assessment Process (SNAP)" introduces the concept.

Alex is CEO and Founder of Waterline Data. As founder of three startups, Alex spent his career inventing cutting edge data-oriented technology and bringing it to market. Prior to Waterline Data, Alex served as GM of Informatica’s Data Quality Business Unit, driving Marketing, Product Management and R&D for an $80M business. Also for Informatica, Alex managed a team of 400 engineers and product managers as SVP of R&D for Core Technology, developing Informatica’s platform and Data Integration technology. Alex joined Informatica from IBM, where he was an IBM Distinguished Engineer for the Information Integration team. IBM acquired Alex's second startup, Exeros, where he was founder, CTO and VP of Engineering. Previously, Alex was co-founder, CTO and VP of Engineering at Acta Technology (acquired by Business Objects and now marketed as SAP Business Objects Data Services). Prior to founding Acta, Alex managed development of Replication Server at Sybase and worked on Sybase’s strategy for enterprise application integration (EAI). Earlier, he developed the database kernel for Amdahl’s Design Automation group. Alex holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University School of Engineering and a M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Elza Dunkels is a senior lecturer at the Department of Applied Educational Science at Ume� University, Sweden. Her PhD from 2007 deals with young people's own perceptions of online dangers. She is currently involved projects concerning online risk, adult's perceptions of online dangers and sexual exploitation of young people online.

Gun-Marie Fr�nberg is Professor in Educational Work at the Department of Applied Educational Science, Ume� University, Sweden. Her research interests include social and cultural perspectives on contemporary educational work. There is a particular focus on social values and net cultures at the intersection of age, class, gender and ethnicity.

Camilla H�llgren works as a senior lecturer at the department of Applied Educational Science at Ume� University in Sweden. She has a PhD in Educational Work, from the same university. Her research interest deals with the complexity of identity, young people, social values and online interactions.

Great text for anesthesia providers or anyone managing airways. Well written, interesting, helpful, practical. Highly recommend it. (I purchased a "used" copy that was crisp and unmarked for a fraction of the new book cost, would suggest looking at those prices too before paying full price). Still, worth the money either way.

A WWII adventure book series.

The Author has set this adventure series during the WWII era. This particular book was the first in the series. Interesting reading about two teen agers and their adventures.

Excellent way for aviation and action-oriented 2nd graders to fall in love with reading through the medium of novels.

These Dave Dawson books ("at Dunkirk and "with the RAF) were left strategically around my parents' home when I was in grammar school and began to read.,They knew I was hooked on WWII airplanes and piloting, so they gave me novels about what I was interested in at a grammar school level, I gobbled them up, since I was a child during WWII, and was (and still am) mentally locked into WWII and the valiant and honorable performance of our citizen warriors, including my Uncle Frank who flew P-47's and P-51's in Europe and my Uncle Click who piloted an A-26 in the Pacific theater.Having recently reread this and "Dave Dawson with the R.A.F" I find the protagonists as squared away, patriotic, brave, and clean-cut as they had lingered in my memory over the many decades since I first met them. I wholeheartedly recommend these for any grammar and middle school children for several reasons: (1) these boys exude pure-minded, noble, and brave-hearted patriotism in the context of WWII in Europe (before the US entered the war); (2) they provide an excellent history lesson on the beginnings of WWII in Europe. Subsequent books in the series take them to Asia (which never read); (3) these books taught me that I could enjoy stories in novels like I never could experience in a 1.5 hour movie. Just because such values are archaic in today's world, I think these books would give grammar schoolers a solid boost in their character development. Just my opinion, of course, but you can bet my grandchildren (boys and girls) will get copies of these novels (on, perhaps with a, Kindle) when they get to 2nd grade..

Great Book!

I have read these books since I was in second grade, some 40 plus years ago. They still hold my attention from cover to cover! I can picture where they are and what they are doing and feeling. I would recommend this series to anyone who would like to feel as if they were in another time and place, if not for just a short time. You may get hooked on them as I did, and keep reading them in one sitting!

About the Author
William Smith, MS, NSCA, CSCS, MEPD, completed his B.S. in exercise science at Western Michigan University followed by a master's degree in education and a post-graduate program at Rutgers University. In 1993, Will began coaching triathletes and working with athletes and post-rehab clientele. He was a Division I Collegiate Strength Coach and has been competing in triathlons and marathons since 1998, recently finishing the Steelhead Half Ironman in Michigan in 5 hours and 22 minutes. Will founded Will Power and Fitness Associates and currently consults for fitness, healthcare, and wellness centers in New York and New Jersey. The Director of the Professional Development Institute, Will has also co-authored a book on triathalon training (Tri-Power, 2007).

Kenneth Adler, M.D. is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the New Jersey Medical School and Associate Member of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.�After receiving his medical education at Albany Medical College of Union University, Dr. Adler went on to specialize in Hematology-Oncology, and currently serves as Attending Physician in Hematology-Oncology at the Carol Simon Cancer Center in Morristown, New Jersey.�He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, The Oncology Society of New Jersey, The American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is currently Chairman of the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research, and a member of Regional Cancer Care Associates.

Great resource for every patient or their family, but a must-have for every fitness professional.

Yes, this is an illuminating primer for cancer patients or their family members. However, Exercises for Cancer Wellness should be in every fitness professional's resources library! Will Smith has done a great job translating what can be a complicated topic down into a simple step-by-step "how-to" guide. The book presents important simple facts about cancer, followed by an evidence-based rationale emphasizing the benefits of exercise for the cancer patient, and finally gets to the heart of the matter - the specific exercises and progressions. As a 36-year veteran fitness professional, I can attest that at some point in their career, every fitness professional is going to instruct, coach, or work with a cancer patient. That makes this book a must-have.
