A Gift of Play, Courage and Acceptance

Jean-Claude van Itallie has spent his adult life in the theater and studying Tibetan Buddhism. The translator of Chekhov, the pioneer in experimental theater, the author, teacher, student and founder of Shantigar, a retreat in the New England hills, has given readers a way of facing their fears by playing with them -- essentially having tea with their personal demons, one game at a time. People have a need to play. People have a need to live with their fears. People have a need to focus on themselves, mind and body, coordinated together. These games enable the person who buys this book or who is fortunate enough to take one of the author's workshops to play in a time when life feels too much like Blake's dark Satanic mills. The exercises are "games" to provide humor and refreshment even as you don't confront your fears but reach out to them as if they were playmates and honored guests. For people raised in an American tradition of struggle, they are refreshing, not arduous.
This past August, I took the Tea with Demons workshop. I'd never done anything like that, anything theater-based or connected with an Eastern philosophic discipline. From the moment I entered Shantigar's red doors, I felt different. Time fell away, and although I was afraid, I knew I was among people to whom it was safe to share it. I learned to move and breathe and center in myself and even perform, for the first time in my life. The emotions came bubbling through, to be blown away by the winds. By the end, I felt more relaxed, more focused and more playful.
You can fight your inner demons your whole life. In the end, they're still inside you, so you may as well invite them for tea, laugh and achieve more peace than you had. What have you got to lose? Stress. What have you got to gain? Calmness and delight.
The first step is the hardest. It seems counter-intuitive. But it works, and you emerge from each game refreshed. Come on, try it!
