Very few have, or could have, the temerity to attempt making a commentary on "All And Everything: Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson" by George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. Of the handful who have done so or might do so in the future, Orage was surely the best qualified. It is odd this his "Commentary" goes almost unregarded although it is the nearest in time, and perhaps in personal understanding also, to the author. It has lain buried in C. S. Nott's "Teachings of Gurdjieff" published in 1961. If you are truly interested in "All and Everything" you will surely find these commentaries very helpful and will be pleased to be reminded of them. But even if your interest is only minimal and you are one of those who think Gurdjieff's book is "out-of-date", read it all the same. All and Everything plus The Method = Sheer Brilliance!

No instant wisdom, without Work and payment. To approach this volume of A.R. Orage (with excellent introduction by the late Anne Staveley, and skilled editing by C.S. Nott) one has to follow Gurdjieff's instruction to read 'All and Everything', 1st series- three times.(in the manner Gurdjieff specifically instructs). 'Beelzebub' has been described as a 'timeless scripture of objective art.' Gurdjieff says, "The answers are not near the doors."
The vital connection is 'The Method', which Orage constantly alludes to, but never describes in precise detail. This Method was taught to Orage and Wilhem Nyland personally by Gurdjieff. When I went to Mr. Nyland's School in 1990, I was graciously given this Gift of the Work-Method. Mr. Nyland, of course had passed years before, but his tenacious and lovingly-loyal students preserved it precisely. Mr. Nyland's lectures were taped, transcribed, and maintained meticulously. I have been practicing the Work-attempt / Method many years and have been astonished with constant verifications of the Higher Objective Plane tens of thousands of miles above this earth!
Orage brings 'Beelzebub' and the Method together so beautifully. Two seemingly different tools are united into a Cosmic Sword. Constant reading and studying 'All and Everything' practiced concurrently with the Practical Gift of the Method / Work attempt- bring about a change in attitude which we begin to Understand and Reason on a more Objective plane. Gurdjieff doesn't describe the Method concisely and clearly in Beelzebub- perhaps he was leaving that for legomonism of his jewel pupils Orage and Nyland. However the supporting principles on many levels are ALL there! Orage in the Commentaries, talks / writes with such an impeccable, surgically clean style, that much light is thrown on 'Beelzebub' but also on the Precious Method. Any serious Gurdjieffian should consider this book an essential 'must read'.
