The sequel to Alien Taste (2001) sends Ukiah Oregon off on the trail of Alicia Kraynak, the niece of his partner Max's best friend. What appears to be an ordinary disappearance quickly turns out to involve alien invaders, the Ontongard (somewhat like the Borg of Star Trek: The Next Generation), and one of Ukiah's earlier selves, the feral Wild Boy of the Oregon wilderness. These contingencies immediately put Ukiah on his mettle, for he is actually the only fertile offspring of a rebel faction of the Ontongard that has been struggling for centuries to save Earth from universal infection and conversion into another conquered group-mind of the "orthodox" Ontongard. The battle against evil aliens is action-packed though relatively unsurprising, but Spencer's skillful characterizations, vividly drawn settings, and comic exploitation of Ukiah's deceptively youthful, highly buff looks make the romp high light entertainment. Ukiah Oregon is Back!

Tainted Trail is the sequel to Alien Taste and continues the adventures of Ukiah Oregon. When Alicia, a close friend, goes missing in Oregon, Max and Ukiah fly out to try and find her. They quickly discover that Alicia's disappearance is a kidnapping and begin a race against the clock. In their search for her, Ukiah finds out that he may be the legendary Wolf Boy that was lost in 1933. He tries to contact the Kicking Deers, who wrote the original newspaper article and offered a reward for information on Magic Boy, but they think he is another fraud and refuse to speak with him. Meanwhile, Max begins to fall in love with Sam, a private investigator whose ex-husband refuses to believe the marriage is over, and discovers that there have been many unexplained deaths in the area. Is there a link between Alicia and the other deaths? How are the Kicking Deers involved? What is Ukiah going to do with his "father" Rennie when he comes out to protect him? Another great mystery featuring Ukiah Oregon.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I got very attached to Spencer's characters in Alien Taste and was excited to see them again in this book. Ukiah is a fascinating combination of innocence and deadly skills. Readers will enjoy learning more about Ukiah as he slowly discovers who and what he is. It was also great to learn more about Rennie, Ukiah's main Pack contact, and his past. Max Bennett finds a love interest this time and starts to come alive again after his first wife's death. Sam is the object of his affections and I look forward to learning more about her because she is one tough lady. I did miss Indigo and Kittaning in this book, though, as they were back in Pittsburgh.
Wen Spencer has a nice, smooth writing style that reads very quickly and easily. She has a great plot that keeps you glued to this book and many subplots that add to, rather than detract from, this book as a whole. For those of you who haven't read Alien Taste, I highly recommend that you do (because I like to read series in order), but, if you haven't, you can read this book and understand everything because Spencer gives nice synopses throughout. However, it does not detract or bore those readers who already know what she is talking about. Tainted Trail has lovely characterization, nice descriptive details, an exciting plot line - in short, this book has it all!

Another entertaining, enjoyable book about Ukiah Oregon

In this sequel to _Alien Taste_, Ukiah Oregon, his friends and assorted "family" are involved in tracing another disappearance. This time, the missing, possibly kidnapped person is a close friend. The action takes place in Oregon, a place where as a young boy Ukiah was found by his adopted parents. The search is not only for the missing woman, but also for the missing memories of Ukiah's youth.
As in the previous book, the author creates a combination of appealing characters and involving plot. The beginning of the book is rather slow, but is effective in building anxiety for the missing woman. The adventure accelerates, and sustains a high level of suspense to the end. There are elements of humor, wonder and romance sprinkled throughout. While a little of the humor is a bit forced, many lines are so well integrated that one breaks out into laughter involuntarily.
This is science fiction, and inventive one at that. But the main attraction of the novel are the interesting characters and their interaction.

Another excellent Ukiah book

Ukiah Oregon and his PI investigative partner Max are back, picking up the action a couple of months after 'Alien Taste' finished. Although the events of Alien Taste are synopsised at various points in Tainted Trail, I highly recommend that you read Alien Taste first, both for the background to this the second book, and because it is such an original, well conceived and executed tale in itself.
Spencer continues this excellence in Tainted Trail. Ukiah and Max have come to Oregon to investigate the disappearance of the niece of colleague Kraynak, who is also known to them as she used to work for the agency. Ukiah, with his tracking abilities down to the cellular level, is quickly on the trail. As usual, that's where things start getting interesting. FBI, sheriff, family, Ontongard, Pack, and the recovery of a few more memories. It's great. Twists, turns, unanticipated events - as before, the reader learns with Ukiah as he finds out as much about himself as he does the case he is working on.
Ukiah maturing - he's still somewhat of an innocent, but he is becoming more aware of light and dark, and shades of grey. Even Max, always heroic to Ukiah, causes him moments of disquiet here. But the essence of Ukiah is the same - someone who loves fiercely and loyally, and must protect those he loves at all costs. And even those that are Pack come to respect that element in him. I missed some of the characters in Alien Taste, especially Indigo who had to 'stay at home and mind the child' (urgh! Considering Indigo's steely strength I have to say I didn't like this passive role for her, but this is a very mild niggle). But meeting Magic Boy's family more than made up for it, and Max's own secondary story was excellent. Once again, in an author that clearly knows the seedy side of life, I really enjoyed that although bad things happened to good people, for those I really cared about Ukiah was eventually able to make it right - this time with help from Jared. Ukiah really is a true hero, overcoming the odds and fighting for what he sees as right. I enjoyed this book every bit as much as the first one, and am looking forward with great anticipation to reading the next (Bitter Waters).

I first met Susan Batson in New York just a week before I made Peacemaker. We worked together in earnest for two years on Eyes Wide Shut in London and on every film I've done since, wherever they've taken us. This book you hold is called Truth, and that title precisely describes the core of the work Susan Batson and I do together.

I can't create unless I have truth--I have to feel it. Susan helps me to find the truth in myself and use its purity, intimacy, and honesty to make my work real. She's helped me to nurture and protect truth in myself and in the characters that I've played. What I've learned from Susan is how to keep the truth alive no matter what. There's so much more to acting than just creative success. It runs thicker and deeper than that. It has to--it's in my blood, it beats through me. I know that it's in Susan's blood, too. I feel like we've been together my whole life.

A great teacher can make anything seem possible. So many of the actors I've admired and idolized and, in a few lucky instances, been blessed to work with, were shaped and inspired by teachers who opened them to the possibilities of their art. the ultimate teacher, a true teacher

Brilliant, generous, unique teachers have the potential to change a student's life. Rarely does a student (or even reader) have the sheer luck to come across a teacher who possesses it all: a "coach" with the unique ability to be sensitive to each individual's particular needs; a mind like a steel trap (with an expansive body of knowledge, references, and even more important, real-world experiences unmatched by her competitors; an almost altruistic sense of service and generosity to one's "students" (students in life and in acting); and of course, a no-nonsense backbone that kicks a novice in the pants when s/he needs it, but just as easily provides a hug (or money for dinner) when s/he needs that, instead.

Nicole Kidman is exceptionally successful as an actor, so it's fitting that her words grace this book's Introduction. But anyone who has ever met Ms. Batson or had the great fortune of knowing/studying with her personally knows firsthand that the kind, flattering, almost hyperbolic description provided by Kidman is completely accurate. The heart, wisdom, humility, and power that define Ms. Batson, as well as what she provides to those lucky enough to learn/have learned from her in person, seems to be as meaningful to Oscar winners (Kidman, Juliette Binoche, etc.), as to the hundreds of anonymous actors and former actors to inhabit her classrooms.

Buying/possessing this book is a good idea for anyone concerned with "truth," anyone with a penchant for the performing arts, or really, anyone interested in the important, sometimes painfully difficult art of introspection and living life more authentically.

As a former acting student of Ms. Batson's (I'm a college literature professor now), I always listen for her name when one of her more famous "students" receives an award on television. Once, perhaps at the Oscars, Kidman referred to Ms. Batson as her "guru" and a "spiritual godmother." For those fortunate few of us who can also boast former classroom experience with Ms. Batson, we nod our head in agreement - she is just that. The lessons she offered me nearly ten years ago (lessons about acting, I suppose, but more so, about life, about growth) are still a part of my daily life, how I practice living. For that reason, anyone with an interest in learning more about "truth" would certainly benefit from buying this book.

Best book on acting I've ever read... (and I've poured through Stanislavsky and more modern texts) It would be wise to study with Susan Batson... Either way, read her book. Buy this book for anyone interested in acting, theater, and life itself. The tools she offers for acting, are useful for living authentic lives and up to the ancient command "know thyself."

All and Everything plus The Method = Sheer Brilliance!

No instant wisdom, without Work and payment. To approach this volume of A.R. Orage (with excellent introduction by the late Anne Staveley, and skilled editing by C.S. Nott) one has to follow Gurdjieff's instruction to read 'All and Everything', 1st series- three times.(in the manner Gurdjieff specifically instructs). 'Beelzebub' has been described as a 'timeless scripture of objective art.' Gurdjieff says, "The answers are not near the doors."

The vital connection is 'The Method', which Orage constantly alludes to, but never describes in precise detail. This Method was taught to Orage and Wilhem Nyland personally by Gurdjieff. When I went to Mr. Nyland's School in 1990, I was graciously given this Gift of the Work-Method. Mr. Nyland, of course had passed years before, but his tenacious and lovingly-loyal students preserved it precisely. Mr. Nyland's lectures were taped, transcribed, and maintained meticulously. I have been practicing the Work-attempt / Method many years and have been astonished with constant verifications of the Higher Objective Plane tens of thousands of miles above this earth!

Orage brings 'Beelzebub' and the Method together so beautifully. Two seemingly different tools are united into a Cosmic Sword. Constant reading and studying 'All and Everything' practiced concurrently with the Practical Gift of the Method / Work attempt- bring about a change in attitude which we begin to Understand and Reason on a more Objective plane. Gurdjieff doesn't describe the Method concisely and clearly in Beelzebub- perhaps he was leaving that for legomonism of his jewel pupils Orage and Nyland. However the supporting principles on many levels are ALL there! Orage in the Commentaries, talks / writes with such an impeccable, surgically clean style, that much light is thrown on 'Beelzebub' but also on the Precious Method. Any serious Gurdjieffian should consider this book an essential 'must read'.

This book is absolutly the best i ever read!

This book is the best book I have EVER READ in my entire life. My review can not give this book enough Justice. This book is even better than The Divine Healing Technician Manual by Curry R. Blake. Smith Wigglesworth and John G. Lake although amazing people of God, "I doubt that I couldn't do greater things". Now there are other books by ughhh Preying Medic but their all even combined don't even come close to this book! I got this book yesterday for my birthday and I just stated, "any sick amoung you that need healing, come forward". And three backsliders recommitted their lives to my personal Lord & Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth!

Excellent Guide to EDC Choices

Fantastic guide to the art and science of selecting your own personal EDC gear plan. The author's approach is just what I needed: a thinking man's outline of what to consider about your personal needs, goals strengths, weaknesses and desires while honing in on the best tactical choices for YOU. The book is grounded in solid EDC philosophy and is a great primer on how to think about personal preparedness and personal carries. It's a great value, because it will make you think on the macro level, offers truly challenging questions to help you define your own priorities, and then helps you drill down to the micro decisions you need to make. The book is excellently prepared with the type of precision that gives you confidence in an author--well-written, hyperlinked chapters, and connection to good resources for going forward.Specifically this book helped me realize a goal of streamlining my EDC, and I highly recommend it.

About the Author

Mike Andrews is a senior consultant at Foundstone who specializes in software security and leads the Web application security assessments and Ultimate Web Hacking classes. He brings with him a wealth of commercial and educational experience from both sides of the Atlantic and is a widely published author and speaker. Before joining Foundstone, Mike was a freelance consultant and developer of Web-based information systems, working with clients such as The Economist, the London transport authority, and various United Kingdom universities. In 2002, after being an instructor and researcher for a number of years, Mike joined the Florida Institute of Technology as an assistant professor, where he was responsible for research projects and independent security reviews for the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Research Labs, and Microsoft Corporation. Mike holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Kent at Canterbury in the United Kingdom, where his focus was on debugging tools and programmer psychology.

James A. Whittaker is a professor of computer science at the Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) and is founder of Security Innovation. In 1992, he earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Tennessee. His research interests are software testing, software security, software vulnerability testing, and anticyber warfare technology. James is the author of How to Break Software (Addison-Wesley, 2002) and coauthor (with Hugh Thompson) of How to Break Software Security (Addison-Wesley, 2003), and over fifty peer-reviewed papers on software development and computer security. He holds patents on various inventions in software testing and defensive security applications and has attracted millions in funding, sponsorship, and license agreements while a professor at Florida Tech. He has also served as a testing and security consultant for Microsoft, IBM, Rational, and many other United States companies.

In 2001, James was appointed to Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Academic Advisory Board and was named a “Top Scholar” by the editors of the Journal of Systems and Software, based on his research publications in software engineering. Preface

Numerous times we've been asked when the next book in the How to Break... series will come out and what it's going to be about. The overwhelming request from our readers has been on the subject of Web applications. It seems many testers find they are working in this area and are facing the prospect of testing applications that employ applications' specialized protocols and languages that exist on the World Wide Web.

Although many of the tests from How to Break Software (Addison-Wesley, 2002) and How to Break Software Security (Addison-Wesley, 2003) are relevant in this environment, applications hosted on the Internet do suffer from some unique problems. This book tackles those problems in the same spirit of its predecessors with a decided slant toward security issues in Web applications.

Before we go into what this book is all about, first let us tell you what it isn't all about. We are not trying to rewrite the Hacking Exposed books. Although there is an overlap of subject matter with the hacking literature, our intention is not to show how to exploit a Web server or Web application. Our focus is about how to test Web applications for common failures that can lead to such exploitation.

How to Break Web Software is a book written for software developers, testers, managers, and quality assurance professionals to help put the hackers out of business.

This focus necessarily means knowledge of hacker techniques is included in this book. After all, one needs to understand the techniques of their adversary in order to counter them. But, this book is about testing, not about exploitation. Our focus is to guide testers toward areas of the application that are prone to problems and methods of rooting them out.

This book isn't about creating a correct Web application architecture, nor is it about coding Web applications. There are other published opinions on this and each Web development platform has its own unique challenges that must be considered, which books like Innocent Code do so well. How to Break Web Software, however, does contain a lot of information about how not to architect and code a Web application. Thus, Web developers would be wise to consider it as part of their reference library on secure Web programming.

What this book is about is pointing the tester toward specific attacks to try on their application to test its defenses. We will be looking at classic examples of malicious input, ways of bypassing validation and authorization checks, as well as problems inherited from certain configurations/languages/architectures—all in a simple format that will show where to look for the problem, how to test for the problem, and advice on methods of mitigation. How to Break Web Software is intended as a one-stop shop for people to dip into to get information (and inspiration) to test web-based applications for common problems.

One of the best on the topic!

This is a hard topic to find good reading. Most books are usually targeted towards operating systems or malware specifically. However, from the first page, I knew this was something worthwhile. A key part to this book being so good is the format Mike and James use to present each topic thus providing something for attackers and security folks. It also could provide pen testers and auditors some good ammo to use as well.

The layout of the chapters starts with gathering information on targets. Then takes a step towards client side attacks, server side attacks, Language based attacks, Authentication, Privacy, and Web Services. They even throw in a chapter outlining the last 50 years or so of web software defects. Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, we have not always learned from our mistakes.

The best part of the book however, is not the topic as much as it is the layout they use to demonstrate every vulnerability. They start with a topic, Buffer Overflows as an example. The authors describe what it is in a few paragraphs, then discuss when to apply this type of attack, then proceed in How to conduct this attack, and end with How to protect oneself from this attack. Each section is no more than a few paragraphs, ensuring that you do not loose focus on what's being discussed.

The authors also do a great job discussing the tools that one can use to test or perform each attack. Tools such as Nikto, Wikto, Paros and SSL Digger are discussed. When additional information is needed, they provide screenshots and output for one to learn from.

This book is a must for anyone in the role of Web Security, Auditing, or pen testing.

Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read

I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.

The book covers common exploits such as bypassing input validation, SQL injection, and denial of service. There were also several types of attacks I hadn't really considered before. I won't list them here because someone would undoubtedly say, "I can't believe he didn't know about that one!" The authors cover 24 different types of attacks in all. The book also includes coverage of web privacy issues and security related to web services.

Finally, as icing on the cake, a CD is included that contains many tools that will find permanent spots in your arsenal. There are tools to do things like scan web servers for common exploits, mirror sites for local analysis, and check SSL cipher strengths. My favorites are the local proxies that will allow you to view and modify posts as they travel from the client and the server. I always knew I could do this, but didn't know how easy it is. The CD also contains the source code of an example site that includes many flaws for you to practice.

This book is written for software professionals to help them put the hackers out of business. So, it necessarily includes hacker techniques. If you develop or test web software, you should read this book before the hackers do. :-)

Short on content with too much padding

I was disappointed in this book. The actual content was pretty thin, and not very well written. Chapter 1 is a complete waste of time, and actually spends pages explaining what client/server means, what the Web is, and other things that are patently obvious to the supposed audience for this material. I found myself turning to the front to see if this book was written in 1997! You then get nine fairly short chapters with instructions on how to hack a website, more or less; followed by 50 pages of useless padding in the appendices including: an unrelated article co-authored by Whittaker for the IEEE, a detailed list of all the bugs present in their "sample application," and then descriptions of their recommended tools, all of which can easily be found on the Web without paying $22 for this book.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are many typos and other problems like incorrect illustrations, making the reader wonder if Addison-Wesley even employs a copy editor. Furthermore, I felt this book was inaccurately named and described. It's really more about rudimentary hacking and protecting your web application against hackers than web quality or web testing. A beginning web developer might do well to read this as a primer on how to create sites and applications with basic security, but as an experienced tester it was of limited use to me.

Good Idea, Poor Writing

Mathematics For Elementary Teachers: A Conceptual Approach
Pros: Lots of Pictures, Good Quality
Cons: Confusing, Lack of Problem Explanations
Basics: In the interest of full disclosure, I will openly admit that I did first purchase this book about two years ago, during the spring semester of my Freshman year in college to be exact. However, despite this fact I do not think that this piece of information make me ineligible in any way whatsoever to give this book a great review? Why? Because regardless of when I first used it does not change the quality of service I received from it. Overall, I did not really like this book. As far as textbooks go, it is simply average. It has a lot of pictures and stories that make it interesting to flip through, but it also has a number of different word problems and assignments that are quite confusing with either vague or little explanation of how to solve them.
More Information: In simplest words, this book was written to help prospective teachers learn how to teach math in a number of different ways, or rather the goal of the book is to reteach simple concepts that you probably learned in grade school (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc.). The reasoning behind this decision is due to the new Common Core Standards the plague public schools, but also to give new teachers the knowledge to teach many different concepts in different ways in case they were to have a struggling student that just wasn’t getting it. This is all great, but the problems start to arise after you get deeper into the pages as the methods that the authors are attempting to teach are not ones that I learned as a child, nor are they methods that my classmates learned in their earlier educations. Because of this, I was unable to use simple intuition to fill in any gaps that might have come up, and since the book doesn’t do a very good job explaining certain concepts I just ended up getting lost and confused.
Conclusion: Overall, I wasn’t really impressed by this book. For me, all textbooks have some sort of struggle- that is just the way it is, whether it be having tiny words, no being coherent, being dull… the list goes on and on. However, for this book the struggles it faced, and the inability to really explain the concepts it was attempting to teach (and the lack of clear problem solutions!!!!) was a deal breaker. I fully acknowledge and understand what the authors were trying to accomplish with this book, and I respect that. I feel that understanding different ways to teach different problems is a skill that both old and new teachers alike should absolutely have, I am just not confident in this textbooks ability to do so. Because of that, and the other reason mentioned above, I can only give this textbook two stars.

Very Poor Textbook

I took a teaching elementary mathematics class that used this textbook and I found the text incredibly confusing. I was under the impression that taking a class about teaching math to elementary school students would be easy but suprisingly, this ended up being one of the harder math classes I've taken simply because the textbook was very unclear. For instance, many of the practice questions in the book were very complicated yet there wasn't any kind of explanation either in the back of the book or in the example section to show how to go about solving the problem. As a whole, the wording and explanations in this book were some of the worst I've seen. As another reviewer mentioned, most of the material covered in this book pertains to middle school students as opposed to elementary school students, which is the age group I plan on working with. That's not to say that this textbook is unusable but it's unfortunate that many professors choose to use or are forced to use this textbook in their classes.

A great teachers' companion. A book well illustrated in colour and contents informed by sound pedagogical principles. Should be in the libraries of all primary teachers. This book prepares the primary teachers with an arsenal of teaching techniques and teaching resources many of which the teachers can make from inexpensive materials. And in doing so the teachers will get an insight on how learning takes place and so develop executive mastery of the art and craft of teaching.
