Many hours of happy puzzling if you like chess and maths.

This book has six sections, looking at chess and (i) arithmetic and probability (ii)diversions (moving around a board and placement problems (iii) tours (especially knight's) (iv) geometric puzzles (v) amusements and games (vi) miscellaneous. I am enjoying reading this book, because of the number of puzzles, and the variety of puzzles. This book doesn't look at "classical" chess puzzles ("White to move and mate in 2.") Instead, it focusses on more esoteric material. For example, at the moment I am attempting to place 16 pawns on a chessboard so that no three are in a straight line. I can do this easily for rows and columns and the diagonals - but I suspect I also have to eliminate lines formed by two successive knight's jumps. Ouch. Maybe I'll write a small computer program to help me. If you are familiar with the works of Martin Gardner, Sam Lloyd, Henry E Dudney or (the regrograde problems of) Raymod Smullyan, then you will find similar puzzles. But "Mathematics and Chess" provides not two or three puzzles, but 110. Note I said "I am enjoying reading" this book. If I can avoid looking up the answers, I suspect that I will still be reading and puzzling in ten year's time. Not many books can provide that much entertainment. A classical compilation of slightly-different chess problems.

Great Pass Time Book, but a Bit Bugged

This is an excellent book for people interested in solving all sorts of challenging problems. Being a good chess player helps just as much as being good at math, but you will need something more to break the multiple challenges - an inner drive. This book won't help you play chess any better, or be better at math, but it will provide you with an entertaining and brain challenging pass time. Great for sharing some of the learnings with friends, or for setting up parallel contests to see who solves the problems quicker, for individuals or teams.
Unfortunately, the book has bugs here and there. Bugs can be in the solutions, i.e., typos in solutions. Example of this is problem 6.12 with some rook moves mistakenly shown as bishop moves in the solution. Also bugs can be in a poor translation of a word problem into English, to the point where it is totally impossible to understand the intent. Example the fantastic "Where is the King?" problem 4.15, totally spoiled based on the wording of what the king does when he reaches the castle "turns counterclockwise around the castle at the right angle" and bishop (similar wording). Maybe in the native language that wording had an exact meaning, but in English it is totally meaningless. In fact, it is plain wrong, because the intent is for the king to turn 90 degrees to his right, when in fact it seems the turn is 90 degrees to his left. The point is that this is an elegant geometry and math problem that should not be spoiled by inaccurate or misleading wording, i.e., the challenge should not be in guessing at the intent of the wording but at solving the math problem with correct reliable information.
Overall a fantastic book that can provide hours and hours of entertainment, well worth its inexpensive cost!!! However, I challenge the author to clean up the bugs for the next edition. He owes it to the folks that are willing to spend valuable time working the problems!!!

Excelent book on problem solving related to chess and maths

If your work is related to computer science or applied mathematics, and you like problem solving, you will certainly like this book. If you are interested in chess and chess-related problems (orthodox and unorthodox chess problems, retrograde analysis, chess pieces tours, placement of chess pieces etc.) - you will find it here, too.
Being the person who fits both descriptions, I extremely enjoyed solving the problems this book has offered. As far as I know, only a few books combining both mathematics and chess were written in English up to now so that this book is a real attraction and refreshment. Apart from the well known problems (knight's circle, the non-attacking (super)queen problem, Shinkman's zigzag puzzles), a lot of challenging, amusing and delightful puzzles and tasks are included. Problems were chosen very carefully, some of them are easy to solve, others are extremely hard but, fortunately, the author gave the complete solutions for all presented problems. In my opinion, the volume of book of puzzles could be even larger to include another interesting math-chess puzzles, or to present some themes more extensively. Reading this book and solving some of attractive puzzles, I have really enjoyed all the time. In particular, I was impressed by miraculous author's solution of the famous problem about American presidential candidates and the method of planar graphs for solving some switching problems. Added computer programs for solving some problems gives a modern form to the book.
This book offers a too much entertainment for a wide circle of readers who like mathematics and chess.

and I enjoy it more each time

This is a fabulous book. I have read it three times now, and I enjoy it more each time. It is about bicycling over the Alps passes in the year 1900, the tough slog up the passes and the glorious coasting down with magnificent views across the peaks and valleys. It makes you want to go back there and do this with him. Freeston has a wonderful voice, engaging the reader in a warm and friendly way, and full of passion for the glories of the Alps, which he has visited repeatedly. I wish he had told us a little about his wife and her friend who went with him, two women who were clearly in great shape physically although it must be said that his bicycle was a tandem, the "bicycle built for two." I also wish he had given a fuller description of the beautiful panoramic views from the mountain tops and of the glaciers, but the drawings help a lot in that regard.

I also enjoyed his descriptions of how non-cyclist tourists do it, via diligence or railroad, and how hard the Swiss had worked to create the great roads that made all of this tourism possible. A good companion to this is Rollo in Switzerland which although written much earlier, has detailed and evocative descriptions of how beautiful and eerie the glaciers are, the beauty of the mountain peaks and waterfalls, and the exact menus and comforts of the Swiss inns. It is also available in Kindle.

The text of Cycling in the Alps is not that great, OCR with plenty of stray characters but it is not difficult to read.

This book is not for everyone, but if you love travel books and an engaging author who reaches out to you from the pages with warmth and concern, and who really worries that you will have a great experience in the Alps, you will love this book.

So Far, It's Great!

The only reason I haven't given this book a 5-star rating is because I haven't finished the course for which I'm using it. I can say this about it, though:

First of all, the physical quality of the book is great. The cover has a welcoming visual and tactile feel to it, and the pages are clearly made of durable paper. I plan on keeping this book when the course is over. The book's content will certainly prove applicable outside of the classroom. This book is obviously a resource that will be useful no matter what corner of the media industry I end up in.

Doing Ethics in Media is a subject matter that traverses many disciplines and several industries. The book's authors are well-spoken, well-written and credible--both having amassed decades in industry and life experience. Additionally, the supplemental online multimedia materials, which are free, have also already helped add to my grasp of course content. I look forward to using this book in the future--both in class and in my career.

About the Author
The late Harry Hearder, who died in 1996, was a Professor at the University of Wales. His many publications on European and Italian history include Europe in the Nineteenth Century, 2nd edition (1988) and Italy in the Age of the Risorgimento (1983).

Jonathan Morris is Lecturer in Modern European History at University College, London. His publications include The Political Economy of Shopkeeping in Milan 1886-1922 (Cambridge, 1983). He is editor of the Journal of Contemporary European History.

essence of many event's in Italy's long history

Unlike the other reviewers, I found the book refreshing and well articulated. Of course at 300 pages it is indeed a brief precise of such a glorious and long history. In response to concerns that you might have about it being too short, you should realise that there is no lack of long voluminous treatises on many portions of Italy's history.

The book is characterised by the author's ability to sum up entire episodes and events very succinctly. So that you can grasp and hopefully remember the essence of a time, rather than just commit dates and facts to memory.

There was one remark in the text that intrigued me. It said that at the conclusion of the 3rd Punic War, the vengeful Roman senators, especially Cato, had all the surviving Cathaginians enslaved. Some 50 000 of them. Wow. The puzzling point was the suggestion that this led to the fall of the Roman Republic. In other more extensive accounts of the Punic War, I do not remember this causality being bruited about. Is there anything to it?e

I was initially excited by this book when I first bought it, but it became more & more difficult to follow as I went thru it.
The reason is the book's poor usage of events, places and maps. For example: the book talks about what the Etruscans did, but doesn't tell you where they are from or even who they are. The movement of people from the Po Valley is discussed, but you're not told where the Po Valley is. Don't check the index, Po Valley isn't there. There's a map on page 14 on the expansion of Italy, but the territories referenced aren't in the text or the index. I finally gave up trying to place events with places and abandoned the book at page 23.
This is a history of Italy for people who already know the history of italy.

About the Author

Tom Baker is currently a consulting engineer for Sumatron in support of large generating stations. He has performed protection reviews on over 30,000 megawatts of nuclear, coal, oil, and gas generating units; consequently, is well aware of protection oversights that can impact the productivity of large generating stations and covers them in the book. He has developed and presented 29 four-day hotel and on-site comprehensive electrical power engineering seminars for utility protection engineers, nuclear generating stations, municipal utilities, cooperatives, investor owned power producers, and engineering companies. The 4-day seminars are approved by IEEE for educational credit. He holds two patents and developed the "EE Helper Power Engineering" software program.

Previously he worked for Southern California Edison (SCE) for 36 years and had progressive responsibility as a protective relay technician, metering engineer, protection engineer, distribution engineer, apparatus engineer and for the last 15 years with SCE he was the chief electrical engineer for 12 large fossil fuelled generating stations.

Mr. Baker completed a master’s degree in electrical power engineering and management.

Excellent electrical book.

This is a first-class book full of information for engineers and technicians working across a range of industries. The information in the book is of enormous practical value and is clearly explained without much of the academic waffle that you will find in many other books. The knowledge that you will gain from this relatively small book would take years of practical effort and reading of many, many books that are often fairly incomprehensible.

If you work in power stations, the oil and gas industry or indeed any industry that generates electricity then do yourself a favour and buy this book and the software that goes with it. I have been using it to teach technicians and young engineers and they consider it excellent.

The author certainly knows his stuff and it shows- brilliant book.

Great History of P.C.

Readers who need a history of p.c. madness over the last three decades should read this book. Hollywood's white-washing the communist infiltration of the 20s and 30s, the feminist inspired gestapo tactics of the Child Protection Services, the military's still on-going fight against nature in its attempt to force women into combat––these are just a few of the stories Billingsley tells of p.c. encroachment in our public institutions and daily lives. He also recovers some of the worst examples of the damage p.c. orthodoxy can do when allied with government agencies and enabled by venal politicians. His retelling of the Jim Jones and People's Temple disaster is worth the price of the book. This perfect storm of racialist ideology, religious hucksterism, and corrupt politicians––all leading to the worst mass suicide in history––remains the exemplar of just how devastating the wages of p.c. orthodoxy and unexamined dogma can get. A must-read for college-bound young people who may be ignorant of this long history of bad ideas that they will be subjected to on campus. And it's a useful reminder to those recent liberals (like Kirsten Powers) who think this illiberal, intolerant, totalitarian dogma is something new. Intrepid journalists like Lloyd Billingsley have been on the story for a long time.

The book should really be called "Common Sense" but I guess that title is already taken. Mr. Billingsley provides an antidote for the disease of political correctness that is infecting Western culture. Read it and weep. Or laugh. He can be bitingly funny.
