I would recommend actually reading this book after or before listening to ...

My issue is not with the famous writing but with trying to understand it for the first time via audiobook. I would recommend actually reading this book after or before listening to it. It was difficult at times to capture the meaning of Marx's words without being able to read and re-read his statements.

With that said, the beginning of the book is fairly straight-forward as Marx describes his take on the relationship between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This portion will allow the reader to understand the broad implications of Marx's ideals. In the following sections, Marx adjusts his focus to theological and metaphysical critiques which, as I mentioned earlier, are difficult to truly capture in audio-book form.

One of Marx's primary criticisms that stuck out was his attempted refutation of the idea that profits are the only incentive towards labor. He notes that laborers work only for wages, while capitalists (non-producers) earn profits by usurping value from the laborers. Thus he concludes profits are unnecessary for production. However, in this piece he rests his case there. He does not address the need for capital accumulation to assist labor. He does not discuss the role of profits in allocating capital. He also does not discuss the hierarchical production chain (of a single company) ending at the profit-earning capitalist and the incentives created therein. This book is really just a primer on his ideas, requiring the reader to seek further texts for clarification.

Compared to other Mechatronics books I've read, this one has a lot of depth. It goes into a wide variety of subjects, but they're treated with enough detail that these concepts can be reapplied.

Good book on design & analysis for the engineer

Mechatronics represents a process that blends mechanics and electronics with use of precision engineering, computer science, information technology, control system theory, and sensor and actuator technology to design improved products and processes. This book, unlike many in the field, is aimed at upper level undergraduate engineers, not hobbyists or technicians. Therefore a certain amount of mathematical maturity is required. The objectives of this book are:

1. Mathematical modeling of physical systems

2. Building a common set of differential equations of electrical and mechanical systems.

3. Engineering analysis of integrated mechatronics systems in time and frequency domain.

4. Application of integrated modelng and instrumentation techniques to design and analyze an industrial mechatronic system.

There are plenty of examples, figures, and equations throughout the book, and the mathematics should not be difficult for any upper level undergraduate engineer to grasp. The final chapter shows some case studies in Mechatronics design which includes the obvious- a robot design. The appendices provide additional background on Laplace and Fourier transform techniques, and software tools including MATLAB, SIMULINK, and LabVIEW. The book emphasizes practical situations and applications with numerous worked examples, problems, and exercises. I highly recommend it to students of mechanical and electrical engineering who want to learn to design with a unified outlook on these two fields.

This book suits well to educational purposes at the university level. It has really wide material collected into one book, which makes it easier for the students and saves their time. If reviewed from the educational point of view, the book deserves four stars.

The book works also as a reference book for engineers and researchers, although for more serious research purposes there are books that go deeper in some specific areas.

This work is a translation of the Chronicle of the 12th-century Armenian historian, Matthew of Edessa. An Armenian Perspective on the Crusades

Years ago I read Steve Runciman's magnificent 'A History of the Crusades'. There was an appendix in volume 1 of the primary sources for the Crusades listed under languages. It was there that I first heard mention of the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa. I knew one day that I had to own that book.
Matthew of Edessa was an Armenian patriot with a strong moral compass. He was not afraid to criticise the violence he saw and often pulls no punches. He was especially critical of the Byzantine Emperors. He criticises the Emperor John Tzimiskes for assassinating Nikephoros Phocas.
The chronicle covers the years 952 to 1136. The years 952 to 1051 are based on earlier sources. The years 1051 to 1101 are based on the testimony of eye witnesses that Matthew talked to. Finally the years 1101 to 1136 are Matthew's own observations. In the introduction Matthew is stated to have died when the Danishmendid ruler Amr-Ghazi attacked Edessa in 1136. A continuation of the chronicle by Gregory the Priest brings it up to 1162.
There is an interesting account of the battle of Manzikert that is well worth reading. I also found the interactions between the Byzantine Church and the Armenians valuable. At one stage Matthew has the Armenian prince Gagik (Part II.30 - 42) give a long discourse in Constantinople in front of the emperor and the Byzantine clergy that denounces Chalcedonian christology. The emperor is described as finding no fault with Gagik's faith and the Byzantine clergy is stunned. I find this bit hard to believe.

Where Is Elmer Crawford?

The house at 136 Cardinal Road in Melbourne, Victoria, always held a fascination for Greg Fogarty. His family's home was just a very short distance from the home that would become the site of one of Australia's most infamous unsolved murders.

In July 1970, Theresa McManus Crawford was expecting her fourth child on the night her husband Elmer Kyle Crawford brutally murdered her and their three children: Katherine, James, and Karen.

His plan was to kill them and leave their bodies in a remote area where they would never be found. And always the wise one, Elmer's plan included an escape route should his plan go awry: make it look like murder/suicide.

But you know what they say about the best laid plans.

Nothing went as Elmer intended and he became a wanted man; remaining a fugitive even today.

Four decades have passed since the Crawford murders fascinated a young Australian boy. Now he's a grown man who authored a book about the case he never forgot. Originally published in 1997, Almost Perfect: The True Story of the Crawford Family Murders breathes new life into a cold case, garnered world-wide attention, and was nominated for Australia's coveted Ned Kelly award. Plus, the 2011 version offers interesting updates.

I love cold cases and I'm always excited about non-U.S. true crime, so I think it goes without saying that I loved Almost Perfect. It's written in what I would sometimes refer to as a "sterilized style," meaning it doesn't bog readers down with a slew of what-is, maybes, or I-talked-to-him-once interviews. Readers get just the facts with a hypothesis (which is pretty dead on, in my opinion) as icing on the cake.

Any book that I read in one day deserves a spot on my recommend list. And that's exactly where you'll find Almost Perfect by Greg Fogarty.

Got Away!

As an Australian I am always intrigued by unsolved murders on this continent. I knew a little about this unsolved murder of a wife and her three children before I spotted this book for sale on Amazon books. I decided to purchase it and I'm glad I did! Greg Fogarty has written a great, easy to read account of these terrible murders, writing from personal knowledge of the house where it occurred in Melbourne. The murderer used an ingenious method of murder and an unusual way of trying to hide the evidence of what he had done. Unfortunately for him things didn't quite work out as he had hoped. Other than that, he had a lot of luck. I highly recommend 'Almost Perfect' in spite of the frustrating ending', even if you know nothing of Australia.

Seemingly superior to police efforts.

This book needed to be written, for posterity, because the finer details of this once notorious crime aren't publicly recorded elsewhere. Has there ever been another Australian case of a father murdering his family (3 children + wife) in a Machiavellian fashion and absconding for 45 years? That the crime isn't well-known today is somewhat of a travesty, and it seems ridiculous that murderer Elmer Crawford wasn't and may never be found. Although the author (once a policeman, and who'd been a child living in the same street where and time at which the crime occurred) barely criticises the police, there doesn't seem to have been any substantial attempt by them to locate Elmer by reaching out to the public over time. We don't learn what happens to Elmer's assets once he vanishes and what role these played in tracking him (his home, blocks of land, bank accounts and the like), and many details and photographs of the investigation are unfortunately withheld, not just from the reader but from the author, due to a lack of cooperation from police and family involved. There is some unwanted repetition on account of limited source material, although without which this book might seem too short. The author is skilful in not making this too gratuitous and overall it isn't laborious to read. Characterisations of the personalities (likely requiring extensive hours of research), particularly Elmer, are excellent and in my opinion the most satisfying aspect of the book, possibly apt to be extended in a future edition. This is the second edition, and it there is a third it behooves the police to cooperate and be forthcoming – it's the greatest publicity this case has had in many decades. The author has likely investigated and furthered the cause of this case more than Victoria Police and for that this is an exemplary book in a Victorian/Australian context.

About the Author

John Billingham is a maths professor who, when he’s not solving equations, has always been keen on games, particularly chess, which he plays to a reasonable standard. After getting hooked on poker, he discovered that he was a huge fish. The Education of a Modern Poker Player documents his progress, under TT and Manu’s expert guidance, from fish to not quite as much of a fish.

Thomas Tiroch (TwiceT) is a businessman, professional poker player, coach and video producer for Pokerstrategy.com. He has used the money that he won playing poker to finance the many companies he and his business partners have started. Over the course of the book, TT will support and mentor JB through his struggle to master the basics of poker,

Ten years after Lee Jones

The game has changed, so have several key ideas. Perhaps the best exposition of 3 betting light ever written. I especially liked how position was explained in terms of 'streets of value' and pot-control instead of more traditional approaches. Not exactly new info, but concise and thought provoking. I recognized several leaks in my own game and will make adjustments. I also understand what those adjustments should be. Would have been 5 star had it focused more on live play. Well worth a read.

A very modern poker book with instructive examples of play

'Education of a Modern Poker Player' is an excellent book aimed at the online player with a certain level of online no-limit Texas hold'em cash-game experience. There is a surprising amount of bang-up-to-date insight within its pages, and the book might even become a classic, were it not for the rapidly changing world that is its subject. Wisely, it doesn't waste time in bringing complete beginners up to speed, instead assuming some basic knowledge of strategy, relative hand-values, and online tracking software.

The instructive hand examples are the best part for me, but I was enlightened by the emphasis on the utter necessity for success of a strong mind-set, and enjoyed the Interlude on five-card draw, and even the risk-of-ruin derivation. It's fun and motivating to see glimpses of the first author's progress through the stakes, guided by two strong coaches, and there is a lot of high-quality hand-analysis that is missing from most books. The main reason I don't award the book five stars is that I would have liked to see even more hand examples and cash-game theory; I also would have appreciated a smattering of high-quality diagrams or table screenshots to illustrate the action and break up the text. And perhaps some hands played by the coaches, along with Billingham's attempts to predict their moves, would have been entertaining and instructive.

I remain unconvinced by the book that learning about game theory is of substantive practical use, but am probably biased by my lack of comprehension.

Perhaps a link for readers to an accompanying free video in which the two coaches sweat Billingham's play would have nicely rounded out the project, but I'm not complaining. Overall, a solid achievement that will reward repeated reading.

From the start let me say that this is a good book. Its authors approach the subject of teaching modern poker to a beginner who would like to be brought up to speed with what works today. The style advocated feels very loose-aggressive but I will leave other reviews to offer their impressions on this publication.

Cartas recomendables

Un libro breve pero que contiene, a diferencia de su diario, otra manera de relatar lo cotidiano, de un modo m�s encarnado en los hechos si se quiere, y no ya tan hecho poes�a. Aunque con Pizarnik es casi imposible que un escrito suyo no est� inundado de ese decir po�tico que es pr�cticamente su voz. Las cartas pertenecen casi todas al per�odo que ella pasa en Par�s. Y la relaci�n que mantiene con Ostrov permiten que las cartas tengan un tono muy agradable y muy sincero a la vez. Aqu� se ve un poco m�s o mejor c�mo era su intensa lucha por ser o no de este mundo. Las cartas est�n repletas de poes�a. Muchos p�rrafos son poemas. Aunque se nombren aqu� el trabajo, el dinero, las vacaciones, las situaciones obsesivas de un modo m�s concreto. No supera a su Diario, a sus poemas, pero complementa a quienes le interesan su vida y su obra. Por estas cartas se la puede conocer y comprender un poco m�s. Aunque a Pizarnik se la puede comprender con un s�lo poema escuchado sin querer por alguien que no se conoce. Su voz es poes�a.

Alma que gime.

Alejandra Pizarnik es una poetisa con una sensibilidad fuera de lo normal. Su forma de estar en el mundo y de sentir lo que la rodea es muy particular. En estas cartas nos muestra pliegues muy delicados de su ser y adem�s sabe narrarlos con una sutileza que sacude.
