Not recommended for most

I suspect a lot of the five star reviews are from friends of the author because frankly this book is principally an advertisement for his expensive seminars and/or DVD sets. It does not instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds period. What it does do beyond advertising is reinforce repeatedly that all the martial arts training in the world won't work without the right mindset or intention when applying it. This is absolutely correct, but this alone doesn't instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds of violence encounter.
I suspect the author's seminar's and DVDs that actually present the techniques needed to survive a violent encounter are valid, but you won't find them in this book. Fortunately I saw this while searching for another book in the library and read through it in an hour and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. I recommend going to the author's blog and reviewing it. You can get the same information for free and then you can decide if you want to attend the seminar or buy the DVDs.

Sounds Good, BUT...

This book is okay if you are a complete beginner in the world of RBSD (reality based self defense). I can imagine that it might contain some eye opening matrial for someone who has never considered the subject.
However, Tim Larkin presents basic, common sense ideas as if they are THE TRUTH TM, property of Tim Larkin and TFT. As another reviewer said, this book is essentially a 200 page advertisement to study his system (TFT - Target Focus Training).
The basic premise of this book, and Larkin's system, is that real self defense is based on injuring your attacker. This is a welcome insight, and one that is often overlooked in TMA (traditional martial arts). It bears repeating; the answer to a violent situation is to committ violence on your attacker, and violence is not pretty or clean - it is unpleaseant business. Alright, so this is a welcome piece of information, but does it require a $[...] book? How about a $500 DVD course? That is what Tim Larkin is trying to sell.
The real scam starts to become clear when one looks at the nuts and bolts of Larkin's material. So how do you cause an injury on an attacker? You strike vulnerable areas of his anatomy with lots of force. REALLY? You mean I should be trying to hit the eyes, troat, groin, ears and neck??? (Once again, if this IS news to you, you could probably benfit from this book - but there are scores of cheaper books you could benefit from just as much.)
Next, Tim Larkin teaches you to strike by stepping your body weight into a shot... as if this too were HIS discovery. Yes, you should strike with your body weight, and the best way to do this is to step into you strike (dropstep). Jack Dempsey said as much in Championship Fighting in the early 1900's - we didn't need to pay Tim Larkin to tell us this, did we?
As a martial artist, my biggest problem with Larkin's system is its coreographed approach to training. "You hit your attacker with this strike and he will react in this way, giving you this target." Yes, some physical responses are reflexive, but looking at a fight this way completely ignores the reality that fights are ballistic experiences; they happen, more often than not, at "ramming speed." This is another area where Larkin falls short. In his system he demands that you practice slowly because otherwise it is too dangerous. All I can say is that this is the oldest "carney trick" out there in the world of martial arts. If something doesn't work at 100% speed agasint a committed attacker who is moving however he wants and doesn't know how he is "supposed" to react, it doesn't work. And if you have never practiced a technique at 100% speed, the chances of you being able to use it in a panic situation are exceedingly slim.
So, that's my critique. It went a bit beyond the scope of the book and talked about Tim Larkin's system as well. The reason I did this is because, as other's have said, this book is basically a promotional tool for Larkin's system.
If you are new to RBSD and looking for a good place to start I would recommend the following books:
Gavin DeBecker - The Gift of Fear
Geoff Thompson - Dead or Alive
And remember, you don't have to pay some "expert" a mint in order to learn his super secret system in order to learn how to defend yourself. There is no "TRUTH, TM."

Philosophy - no How To

I was disappointed that the book did not live up to the title "How to SURVIVE" the Most Critical 5 Seconds of Your Life. To me it was just a long internet type teaser to purchase more products (courses and DVDs) Very little actual practical application was in the book. It definitely was not what I expected. I expected a book detailing methods to use to Survive the most critical five seconds of my life. I would not recommend it if you are looking for practical ways to defend yourself. If you are looking for an overview on the psychology of violence and the ways different social elements view and use it-this book is for you.
