Awesome follow up to "American Goddesses."

Trish and Megan are settled in their relationships and lives and accustomed to their powers. Megan is called upon to ease a truck out of the mud and the Helpful Ladies pitch in by popping in and via their psychic network. Henry’s rich tapestry of Helpful Ladies from around the world gives a wider scope to this story to the overall character landscape. Where there is one Melinkova, a logical reader knows there will be more. In the immediate view of Trish and Megan is the coming of age of their own daughters. This natural progression is especially poignant for Trish who has feared the moment from the time her young daughter, Tammy, looked up into a tree only to find herself at the top of it before falling to earth. In a very human moment, we go with Megan and Trish as they introduce Megan’s daughter, Emma, to flying and also to the very real responsibility she faces as a Helpful Lady.

Melinkova is especially interesting. She awakes in the future to find herself in someone else’s body and bad situation and in complete control. She’s baffled by progress but what we know about her is that she is a truly damaged person who wants to control something. Melinkova also desperately wants a connection and it is in the connection with Rhonda Sue Skinner that we see Melinkova’s truest self. Rhonda Sue Skinner is also something of a masterpiece of a unique character. I’d like to say that we meet her at a low point but her life seems to be a constant low point. Her brother dies in prison, her ex-boyfriend comes into the bar with the woman that perhaps overlapped their relationship. That’s just the start of Rhonda Sue’s country song of bad luck. Rhonda is a character who clearly never helps herself and is sad yet fascinating to read.

Henry gives us time to savor with the women we know from the first novel while pushing an action packed storyline that I simply did not want to put down. I want more. “Rogue Goddesses” is a wonderfully thrilling story. “Rogue Goddesses” is a 15 star out of five stars read. If you like this sort of novel but haven’t read the first, the latter novel stands easily on its own. Pick both up today and plan a relaxing evening of holiday awesomeness.

Goddesses Reign!

I read American Goddesses in 2013 and fell in love with the storyline. It had me so entranced. The ability of the writer to be so intricate in his characters, his plots, his fortitude to make the characters into true beings in the novel. After a few months, I knew he was writing a sequel to the amazing American Goddesses, and I anticipated it for what felt like forever! I have read ROGUE GODDESSES, American Goddesses, Book 2, more than once and I can state clearly, I'll be reading it again!
Rogue Goddesses takes you beyond the unbelievable and makes you believe the story. Makes me wonder how our world would be with the Goddesses in charge! From beginning to end, I allowed myself to dive deeply into the characters and follow them on a journey I could not imagine in my own mind! Gary Henry didn't miss a thing in this sequel by thoroughly defining each character and making sure you didn't know what was going to happen next! Speaking of characters, you might find a bit of myself within the story lines as well!
I advise everyone to read American Goddesses first to truly enjoy this sequel, but whether you have or not, Rogue Goddesses will have you ready to go back & read American Goddesses, then read Rogue Goddesses again! The details of the events in the story bring it to life. I felt the heartaches of the characters. The evilness of other characters. I visited places in my mind that were so real because Henry detailed places and characters to perfection. Written so well defined, it all ends up to be one spectacular novel series!
I tend to tell too much about a book, so I'm not going to spoil this one for anyone! I will end in saying this.....Once in a while, one has an opportunity to marvel at someone's work which is so very well written you cannot wait to read their next work!
Thank you Gary for a read that will be one of my all time greats!

The Goddesses Are Back!

The beauty of Rogue Goddesses by Gary Henry is that it works both as a standalone novel or a fitting sequel to the wonderfully entertaining American Goddesses. Henry cleverly uses a prologue to introduce new readers whilst reminding returnees of the backdrop to the story.
In a nutshell, the world is being policed by the women who developed Goddess powers in the original story. The years have rolled on to 2030 when 11,000 telepathically connected women, known as the “helpful ladies”, are fighting crime and keeping the world safe.
All of our favourite characters from American Goddesses are still here but they play a supporting role to the new generation of Goddesses, most notably Tammy, the teenage daughter of Trish and Tom Wilkins.
Henry also reintroduces Melinkova, the rogue Russian Goddess from his original story by allowing her to inhabit the body of a murdered 18 year old prostitute. The incongruity of a hard bitten 48 year old hidden behind a vulnerable appearance makes for every man’s nightmare. In Melinkova, Henry affords us a glimpse of what she might have been had she not been abused by so many men on whom she wreaks a very satisfying revenge. This fracture of personality is even more apparent in his character Rhonda Sue, another rogue Goddess, who we come to view sympathetically despite the carnage she unleashes.
Henry’s skill as a writer is apparent in the assured way he is able to switch between time frames. There is a sub-plot, where Tammy is taken forward to 2630 and shown a vision of a future where the rogue Goddesses have enslaved all of mankind. This is done order to galvanise her into using her fledging powers and is a device that works extremely well, even allowing Henry to have a little fun at the end of the novel.
Rogue Goddesses is set in the future and contains elements of sci-fi. For example, there are nani-phones which allow people to quite literally have all of technology at their fingertips and driverless cars. Henry’s style though is such that he makes these things completely believable within the realms of his story, just as he does with the many powers that the Goddesses enjoy.
Ultimately, Rogue Goddesses is a celebration of women and sisterhood. Henry presents us with the ideal of a supportive and kind, matriarchal society, which is able to triumph despite the threat posed by the somewhat sad rather than bad rogue Goddesses.
I loved this novel, it’s a lot of fun and it makes a refreshing change to read about women who are kicking ass and saving the world.

Dianna Aston has a way of taking those deep, overwhelming, and beautiful feelings that a person experiences when a child is born, and lays them out on the page with such delicate precision. I'm in Awe. Reading this book brought me back to that place of wonder. The words are magnified by E. B. Lewis's Illustrations. This book is the most eloquent and beautiful children's book on the birth of a new baby. What an amazing gift this would make for a new baby! We have read ours many times and everyone in our home treasures it.

Too personal

I returned this book because it seemed to be about the author's personal experience when her grandchild was born. She mentions the child's uncle, the neighbors coming to visit and talking about their own baby's births, and other members of her grandchild's family. I felt it didn't focus on the baby and family you were intending the book for, but rather, on the author's own grandchild. My thought was, suppose the child you're buying the book for doesn't have an uncle, or grandfather? I did read someone else's review and that person mentioned the same thing. However, I felt it would be ok, despite what she said. Now, I have to agree with her.

Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way.

Freelance journalist Knapp began drinking in her early teens and continued unabatedly until she "hit bottom" in 1995 and checked herself into a rehab at the age of 36. During that time she managed to graduate with honors from Brown and have a successful career as a journalist, and few people suspected she had a problem with the bottle. Here she recounts the years of denial that helped her rationalize the blackouts, innumerable hangovers, broken relationships and family tensions characteristic of the alcoholic's story. Knapp interweaves her personal history with factual information about alcohol abuse, including frequent references to the AA meetings she's attended. Knapp, a contributing editor for New Woman magazine and weekly columnist for the Boston Phoenix, has written a personal story of her journey through the maze of alcoholism. Because Knapp is a skilled writer, the engrossing and insightful story transcends the purely confessional tone and becomes of interest to many. One of Knapp's recurring themes concerns the denial that alcoholics practice before admitting their disease. Because she came from a middle-class home where drinking was practiced socially, and not from a place of "chaos and storm," she thought that "true alcoholics" were the "unstable and the lunatic." Gradually, she came to admit that she, too, was an alcoholic and with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous began her recovery. Overall, this book will comfort and sustain the recovering alcoholic while enlightening others who want to understand the psychological dependency involved in alcoholism. One of the best books about a functioning alcoholic!

This is one of my favorite autobiographies. It really hit home for me. It made me look at my own drinking through another person's eyes. Caroline Knapp was a high bottom drunk and I could relate to that. She was high functioning. She was from Boston and wrote for the Boston Phoenix back in the day. No job losses, no messy scenes. But, oh, the feelings! Her description of how drinking felt like going into a room and pulling down the shades really reverberated with me. It's a great read. It's not preachy and it's entertaining. I usually struggle to get through non-fiction books, but I loved this one. It's one of those books I keep recommending. It's just a shame Caroline Knapp is no longer alive to write more wonderful books. Loved this book.

This book put things into words that I thought only I had experienced, that only I had fought against.
It was both humanizing and depressing to know there's more people like me out there.
I thought I was more far gone than anyone else (because I was more far gone than anyone else I KNEW), but this book helps you to understand the commonalities people living successfully-but-unhappily with their addictions have, and does it in an entertaining way.

As I read, almost spellbound, through the pages of this book I was drawn in by the words that caused me to say to myself "this is me; this is the terrible pain and frustration I have felt all of my life". The stories have recognizable 'characters', though certainly not the same people, but almost every one could be transferable to a person or people in my life. This is the most remarkable book I have personally ever read about the 2 diseases that I have faced for over 45 years: depression and alcoholism. The chicken or the egg, which came first. In my case, it was depression. Alcohol was my only source of relief from that pain. But sadly, it then became an entirely 'other' and additional problem. The rage and anger that ensues when that it realized, it so articulately described in this book. The absolute self destruction that results from trying to stop the pain or at least for a short while, ease or avoid it. She mentions that instead of going through emotions, you just go around them. I have had no success with AA but I may have been focusing on the stupid acronyms and cliches. She shines a light on the need to realize that it is about saving your own life. AA stresses that you should "take what works for you and leave the rest". She accomplished that and further goes on to explain that it is an every day effort. This book is written with a 'spot-on' dialogue. I too, as one reviewer mentions, would love to meet Caroline Knapp in person to thank her. I hope so very much that she has finally realized how valuable and brave she is and how she has given a true gift to this world by putting into words, what far too many of us could not find words to express. I will re-read this book many times!
