Helpful Travel Book

This guide was helpful with giving a list of must see places to go in Portugal. I did not find it as useful for restaurant choices as there were plenty of places not in the book that had good food and reasonable prices. The language guide in the back was very useful as English is not a first language for many of the people we ran into on our trip. Especially when we branched out from Lisbon. I would purchase another Fodor trip book in the future.

Good suggestions in the book

For those who do not know Portugal and who do not speak Portugese, a travel book is very helpful. This book has all the places in Portugal. It is complete compared to other travel books. However, since I have an old edition, there are several restaurants in the book, I could not find them. I do not blame the author(s). Hope the new editions have already updated all the points of interest or restaurants.

Comprehensive treatment of a theme... reading experience ruined by poor editing

Pros: Historical facts/anecdotes about the physical nature of light and the psychological/physiological dimensions of color.
Cons: 1) Lack of professional editing. Seems the only editing the text received was using "auto-correct" of a world processing program, leading to inclusion of similar, but wrong words. Examples from a single page (pg. 37) ".. the sky just prior to or after a story has a bluish-gray cast.." "Try arriving well before sunrise if you are shooting dawn scenes because one the sun has crested..." ...for many people (particular people who live in a cold environment..."
2) Many ideas do not apply if you shoot in RAW format.
3) Often unnecessarily verbose.

This book is less technical than books by Bryan Peterson and the the images are not as impressive/treatment of the theme not as artistic as by Brenda Tharp. Both of these authors cover the topics to a sufficient degree, and provide a more enjoyable read. At minimum "Master guide" should have professional editing, better organization of the themes, and higher quality images.

Good read!

I purchased this book based on existing reviews along with several other related books on color printing prior to making archival prints. It was a good read and I digested a considerable amout of useful information, some of which I may never need to use. This book did make me aware of solutions to a few problems I had been experiencing earlier. I plan to read it again soon and may give it five stars at that point.

About the Author
Bernard Schutz has done research and teaching in general relativity and especially its applications in astronomy since 1970. He is the author of more than 200 publications, including Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics and Gravity from the Ground Up (both published by Cambridge University Press). Schutz currently specialises in gravitational wave research, studying the theory of potential sources and designing new methods for analysing the data from current and planned detectors. He is a member of most of the current large-scale gravitational wave projects: GEO600 (of which he is a PI), the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and LISA. Schutz is a Director of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, also known as the Albert Einstein Institute (AEI), in Potsdam, Germany. He holds a part-time chair in Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University, Wales, as well as honorary professorships at Potsdam and Hanover universities in Germany. Educated in the USA, he taught physics and astronomy for twenty years at Cardiff before moving to Germany in 1995 to the newly-founded AEI. In 1998 he founded the open-access online journal Living Reviews in Relativity. The Living Reviews family now includes six journals. In 2006 he was awarded the Amaldi Gold Medal of the Italian Society for Gravitation (SIGRAV), and in 2011 he received an honorary DSc from the University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a member of the Learned Society of Wales, the German Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina and the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences, Uppsala.

Solid start but you'll need Ohanian/wald

This a very readable book that covers a lot of topics nicely. It gives a solid introduction to many of the main topics in the field. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't cover enough material.
My advice if you want a complete understanding of the field is to buy this and the Ohanian text (which is very thorough, pleasantly readable and does covering just about everything you need). Read them side by side and once that is done move on to Wald. Don't bother with MTW, its is a tome of scattered bits and pieces that work as a reference but it is NOT something from which you want to learn the subject.

good first book for learning general relativity

This book is a good introduction to relativity which does not pull punches mathematically speaking but still manages to be merciful to the beginner. I read this book with only a basic background in freshman college physics and calculus. It took me 2 6-month sessions over 2 years to go through it all in detail but it was worth it. It gave me a sufficient familiarity with the core concepts and underlying mathematics to consider tackling a more advanced book on relativity someday. The book starts with special relativity, Minkowski diagrams, 4-vectors, etc., then progresses through background material on tensors, one-forms, metrics, etc. It then goes over general covariance, geodesics in curved spacetime, and the equations of general relativity. Following this there is material on the weak gravity (Newtonian) approximation, including the derivation of the precession of Mercury, a key confirmation of Einstein's theory. Then various metrics relevant to cosmology and black holes are discussed, including the Friedmann-Lemaitre metric (the expanding universe), and the Kerr metric (rotating black holes). It was quite fascinating to see the actual mathematical derivations of many of the key concepts and findings of general relativity that I had previously only read about in popular science books. Each chapter comes with problems which help illuminate the material.

A very worthwhile exercise if non-mathematical descriptions of relativity, cosmology, and high-energy astrophysics leave you wishing for a more in-depth understanding, and if you have a basic physics and math background and the time to spend. Five stars!

Should have been my first GR book!

I got to this book after I had read several GR texts.

Unfortunately, I could have saved much time and grief if I had read it first.

The author is a master in simplifying the often mystical theory of General Relativity.

One requires only a smattering of vector calculus and linear algerbra to begin.

The author begins with an review of SR followed by an introduction to tensor analysis. The notion of perfect fluids culminating in the stress energy tensor is developed.

The mathematics of curved spaces ( Riemann manifolds ) is introduced via christoffel symbols which roughly speaking tell us how the co-ordinate systems change from point to point. The covariant derivative is then introduced and it's nice properties demonstrated. Although connections are not introduced it is shown how the metric induces a natural definition of covariant derivative such that the christoffel symbols possess a certain symmetry condition. This symmetry condition is equivalent to the statement that the covariant derivative of the metric tensor be zero. Once this is achieved one can express christoffel symbols in terms of the metric components.

This is known as the Levi-cevita "connection" in other texts.

Now that we can differentiate on curves spaces ideas of parallel transport and geodesics are developed.

It is then shown that inertial observers in GR travel along geodesics.

The reimann, ricci and einstein tensors are introduced.

Now, we get to the exciting Einstein field equations. I particularly liked how the author gives the motivation and insipiration behind the equation. He shows how Newtons equation for gravitation gives the inspiration for it's generalization. We see how the stress energy tensor represents the "mass density" correlate in Newton's equation. Since this is a (2,0) tensor the left hand side of the equation must also be a ( 2,0) tensor. It is shown that the Einstein Tensor is the best fit.

Thus we see how the presence of matter ( stress energy tensor ) affects the curvature of space ( via the metric components contained within the einstein tensor ).

Now, the resulting equation is simplified to the Newtonian limit ( weak fields - minkowski space with a perturbation factor lead to linearized equations and fields to weak to produce high velocities simplifies the stress energy tensor). These are solved and yield a metric. This metric is then used to calculate the Christoffel symbols which in turn determine the geodesics and hence the motion of particles. We see that these equations of motion are exactly those predicted by Newtonian gravity.

More complicated applications to spherical stars and black holes is explored.

The book is replete with "pearls". For example the importance of the idea of tensors is repeatedly demonstrated. The author shows how tensor equations are INVARIANT under co-ordinate transformations. Thus if an equation is true in one system it is true in ALL systems. This has important applications in simplifying problems. The author does this repeatedly to draw important conclusions.

There are plenty of exercises from basic to advanced.

Basic But Comprehensive, a Beginner's Guide to Holistic Health

The title Free may at first sight, seem to be the heir to Abbie Hoffman's classic Steal This Book, but the "free" in the title relates to the freedom granted when healing takes place. This small book gives the reader a comprehensive look at holistic health--what it is, how to get it, and how it works, with a strong foundation in spirituality. Author Brenda Vanta MD has put together a well-written and thoughtful guide to "getting better" that contains some well-wought exercises in attaining a better state of health. She also gives some valuable links (I echo her appreciation of the Sedona Method) to internet resources that can help the reader on his or her way. Because Vanta is herself a medical doctor, it is hoped that readers will give this little volume a chance--it has a lot to offer.

The author's communication style is interesting and refreshing. She presents genuine accounts, personal experiences and insights, which lead to her breakthroughs for financial, physical and emotional freedom. The beauty of the work is that the author, through her reflections, including academic accounts, spiritual explorations and practical exercises, pulls in the reader to realize and gain personal insights and inspiration to begin the process of healing to have relief and freedom with money, health and relationships. This work empowers. I am happy to share that I believe Brenda Vanta, M.D. has given us a nicely packaged gift of useful tools and refreshing perspectives on where to look and how to find peace and empowerment to live richly, fully and freely. Sandwich of build/trade, harem, anti-hero, and litRPG

This is not a deep story, but a fun one. The main elements that make this story surprisingly great:

-Buildup of his own empire from scratch
-Villain doing good superhero stuff with villain's flare to it
-Some trading
-Cool tech/inventions
-Light harem action
-Character growth/leveling (specifically litRPG style, some will like others won't)
-Interesting abilities (typical of the super genre)

Only things that really nag me after reading this story:

-Start premise was a bit weak, but it was brief and we moved on so that's good
-The end. It was done poorly/rushed. Should have had another 10-15 pages setting everything right and tying up loose ends.
-The main character getting his hands dirty there at the end. Should have stayed true to form and found a way to get the job done using his own unique talents/characteristics. (Everything after reaching the elevator bottom was garbage.)
-Who was really the bad guy here? Yeah we kind of got a vague answer, but the point to the conflict was really vague and glossed over. He's just always under attack for what turns out to be a pretty thin reason that's answered in basically 2 or 3 sentences on a random page towards the end.

Despite those few flaws, this is really one of the best books of it's type I've read in a year or two. Not many come out with with these plot elements that are done well. (Similar recent non-super examples would include the Stavin Dragonblessed series by Loren K. Jones, ALICE by Charles Lamb, Wild Wastes by Randi Darren, and Destiny's Crucible by Olan Thorensen.) Keeps you turning the page for sure. Short enough for a half-day read.

I don't generally like most "super" stories, but this one was very solid. I'll buy the next in the series without waiting for reviews.

New take on Supers and LitRPG

Lets start with the fact that this book hits LitRPG from an entirely new angle. I have never heard of a combination of niche genres quite like this, and the execution? Excellent. Nothing is as straightforward or black and white as it may appear. Much like reality. The MC is human, with human foibles and flaws, but the ability to adapt and grow based on the interactions of those around him. The MC at the beginning is wholly different from the MC at the end. Characters have true substance and motivations, not flat and 2d. Even my wife loves this book, and she hates Super Hero/Villain themed books. Great job William!

I'm new to the LitRPG genre, but have played the games in the past, and this is just like one - with super powers and buying / trading, and enough character development that you care what happens to the good guys, and the bad guys (in mean sort of way.) I'm not writing a book report here, and so won't break down the plot. I'm just saying that if you're at all interested in the genre (or even if you're not into LitRPG) this book is probably worth your time.
I highly recommend it and will certainly buy the followup. In fact, I'm planning to check out the author's previous trilogy "Otherlife", and will probably buy that too.

Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga sent shock waves through the British command. I read this book because I have Loyalist ancestors who were members of Butler's Rangers and almost certainly participated in the battles described in such detail. My ancestors, William Pickard and his 2 sons James and Benjamin, two privates and a drummer boy, did not get mentioned in the book, but that was not a problem since around 900 people were in Butler's Rangers. They survived to move to Canada after the war and they started large families after leaving their homes in Tryon County.

The book has a nice section on the key personalities that I found useful since there were Butlers on both the Loyalist and Patriot sides. The book would be improved by detailed maps. Unless you can imagine where places like Tioga, Unidilla and Stone Arabia are, you will read the book in front of your computer with Google Maps open as I did. The book would also be improved with contemporary photos of the battle sites; some of these, like the Battle of Newton, were easily found on the web.

I learned much from the book and enjoyed it. It was very interesting to see that the Rangers contained a good number of Black soldiers who lived with the rest of the Rangers and the Indians. It was also interesting to see how both sides courted the Indians and tried to win their support. The book really makes the Revolution look much more like a civil war than people typically think.

Well Researched and Written Book about the Indian Wars during the American Revolution

This is a well researched and written book about the Indian wars on the New York and Pennsylvania frontiers during the American Revolution. It tells the stories of the Wyoming Massacre, the Cherry Valley Massacre and the Sullivan campaign providing the details on each but in a very readable format. It also provides some details on other not so well known events on the frontiers like the situation around Pittsburgh and in western Pennsylvania. Consequently, this book fills in a gap in the American Revolution and worth the purchase for any individual interested in reading more about that period.

After two years of fighting in America with limited success, the British felt they were, to coin a popularized modern term, in a bit of a quagmire, and sought a new strategy for their overseas war. The new strategy involved moving the war away from the more populated northeast and into the western frontier. This move would not only disperse the already diminutive American forces, but would also allow Britain to utilize its strongest North American allied force, the Iroquois Indian Confederacy.

Glenn William's book, THE YEAR OF THE HANGMAN: WASHINGTON'S WAR AGAINST THE IROQUOIS chronicles the events that took place in those western frontier skirmishes and battles. The book derives its name for the year, 1777, which had become popularly known at the time as the `year of the hangman' due to the three sevens appearance of gallows when written, though the majority of the events actually occurred in 1779. Though using that title for his book was too good of an opportunity to pass up, William's title is slightly misleading as to the dates of the primary events.

The Iroquois, though primarily located in Western and Central New York, were quite possibly the strongest Indian nation of North America for a span of over 500 years. Their control reached across the Great Lakes into Central Wisconsin and their rise to prominence came at the cost of driving out, and driving to extinction, numerous other Indian tribes of the region. They were, to be sure, a force to be reckoned with.

Both the Americans and the British had heavily lobbied allegiance with the Iroquois, but in the end, the Indians felt their best chance for future lay at the hands of the British and consequently, four of the six main tribes of the Iroquois sided with the British. This error in judgment would prove fatal to the Iroquois nation, when, as a primary result of the Sullivan Expedition, the Iroquois nation would virtually lose all of its military and political power.

While the Sullivan Expedition is the primary focus of William's book, other major events are deftly chronicled as well, such as the Battle of Oriskany and the Wyoming Valley attacks. By 1979, Gen. Washington had successfully developed the army making it capable of taking the fight to the Indians and literally destroying their economical stability and rendering them harmless, not just for the remainder of the revolution, but into the subsequent years of frontier settlement into the traditional Iroquois homelands.

That Washington was able to develop a force the size of the Sullivan Expedition (5000 men) is in and of itself, a testament to Washington's military leadership abilities and, though today, only an afterthought in Revolutionary history, stands as one of the General's greatest military accomplishments.

This is good reading. Glenn William's had put together a readable and valuable presentation of a rather forgotten aspect of America's fight for independence.

Great starting point and a good reference. Brushes subtleties under the rug

This book contains the essentials. It is a large book and includes many topics. The presentation is clear and lucid. I do wish, however, that the authors better conveyed the subtleties behind many of the topics. The book is written in a way that you won't necessarily appreciate important assumptions being made is some of the derivations. Relaxing some of those assumptions can lead to very different physics. For example, the lab vs. center of mass frame dynamics/energies in dynamical friction; the actual dynamics in the lab frame can analytically be derived of course but is much more subtle:

But the book gives you the feeling that it is all very simple and done.

Nevertheless it serves as an excellent reference and perhaps the best starting point when working on problems in Galactic Dynamics. A classic, updated

The bible of galactic dynamics. I like having it handy on all my devices rather than having to lug around the heavy book. While the content of the book is beyond reproach I dock one star for ebook production issues. The equations and figures were scanned at low resolution so they do not look good on high-resolution (retina) displays. The figures need to be scanned at higher resolution. The equations should be done with high-resolution scans or by generating them directly from the TeX source and using high-resolution fonts.

I am so glad that I bought this book. I was planning to Trek in Nepal. I did not realize how extensive the earthquake damage was. The book clearly states which trails and which areas were affected by the earthquake.
