This generously illustrated volume places German sculptor Charlotte Posenenske's groundbreaking works from the 1960s firmly within the history of Minimalist sculpture and Conceptual art. A contemporary of Donald Judd, Posenenske is most known for her body of spare, repetitive forms made from industrial materials, corrugated cardboard, pressboard and sheet metal, which she manipulated and bent for public spaces and performative appearances. In the mid-1960s, after producing several series of Abstract Expressionist and Constructivist paintings, Posenenske began the body of work she is most associated with today: the infinitely positionable and site-specific ventilation shaft-like series Square Tubes (1967). She was featured in Documenta 12 in 2007 and her pieces are part of numerous collections, but her work receded from the foreground when she abandoned sculpture in 1968, feeling that art did not have sufficient political impact. Posenenske died in 1985; this monograph secures her legacy.

Merging of Reality with Virtuality

"Toward a Ludic Architecture : The Space of Play and Game" written by Steffen P. Walz, a well written informative book that carries the reader through the development of the computer with it's intended purpose of playing chess to the consumptive use for mass media involving play, games, and architecture. Twenty five percent of the book allows for definitions, historical backgound and references. That twenty five percent of material is neccessay for a novice like me who is unfamiliar with virtual games and the interaction of humans with virtual spaces.

He defines many of the simple words and activities which we are familar with, but which we donot really take into serious consideration. Activities that humans participate in ,but do not question the logic that is involved for instance the difference between play and games, and why and what is involved in these activities.

He also gives information about the purpose behind the games and spaces, the intentions of the creator and how the players are able to interact mentally and physically with the activities that are provided.

Steffen P. Walz main concept is the involvment of architecture with play, and games. By showing architecture in virtual spaces, it will become a part of virtual space as well as real space.

This book is a good reference text for all who play, play games, and who use virtual spaces. Walz predicts that virtual space will take over all present kinds of entertainment plus how we work and play in spaces.

Essential reading on play-related architecture

In "Toward a Ludic Architecture", Steffen P. Walz discusses various concepts of spatiality as it relates to games and play, but his focus is especially on architectural concepts, and ARG examples to which he himself has contributed. As a part of design literature, the book is an invaluable addition to the corpus of game spatiality and the way it links to similar ideas in structures, playgrounds, societies and so forth. The author is also exemplarily inclusive, being able to weave in theories from a variety of scholars. I especially liked the way he incorporates less well known Dutch and German language research works, making them now available to an international audience of scholars.

The book, rather surprisingly, does suffer from one big flaw. While inclusive in other regards, Walz is strangely limited in the way he discusses spatiality itself. The viewpoint is very much fixed to an architectural one, and the volume includes next to no references to the way space and place is treated in, say, philosophy, geography or telepresence research. Therefore, it is a book best utilized in the company of others, so as to give the otherwise excellent argumentation a much wider, yet totally appropriate (and very compatible) context.

This is a book that shoud be included in practically every game studies and/or design laboratory, and it would be of high value also to other fields, such as service design.

As it turns out, Coco Chanel is a terrific subject for a picture-book biography. A poor, skinny orphan, she brightened her colorless convent childhood by sewing dresses for her dolls. She also dreamed big dreams. Once she was on her own, she turned her tailoring talent into a career as a dress designer. Coco, who was sticklike rather than shapely, designed dresses for figures like hers. Soon, her clothes were being snapped up, and thanks to her enigmatic personality and sense of style, she became a celebrity. Matthews' writing style is right on the mark, as breezy and appealing as Coco herself. Wisely, the author frontloads the book with stories of Coco's disadvantaged youth, which have immediate pull for readers. It's too bad that the pictures don't measure up to the writing. Although often amusing, and occasionally moving, they never capture Coco's elegance. Moreover, all the characters have snoutlike noses that are seriously distracting. Applause! Applause!

Children's non-fiction books have come a long way, not just in style but in subject matter. How great that Candlewick saw fit to publish a picture book biography of, astonishingly, someone the average child is probably unfamiliar with -- a woman who died long before the child was born, from a country not much studied in grade schools, representing a profession hardly mentioned at all: fashion designer. But Elizabeth Matthews, through text and pictures, has made Coco Chanel someone little girls (and open-minded little boys?) can identify with. Chanel's story is a literal rags-to-riches tale, and Matthews' enchanting art work captures her heroine's style and joie de vivre (not to mention chutzpah, to mix linguistic tags) beautifully. The cover image itself could be posted on a little girl's bedroom wall. And underneath, perhaps, the words "Dare to be Different. Like Coco."

REVELING IN CORSET-LESS CHIC

As Maurice Chevalier sang, "Thank Heaven for little girls" . . . at least we can thank Heaven for one who grew up with an independent spirit, and an imagination for corset-Less chic. Coco Chanel (1883-1971) said "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different." The book's end papers reproduce other quotations from this fashion icon, including "Fashion is made to become unfashionable!"

Elizabeth Matthews has written a perfect Springtime fancy, and the pen & ink illustrations are every bit as lively, just right for introducing children & their very willing parents to a story about the little girl Coco who overcame her tough childhood with sewing skills learned in a Catholic orphanage. She could hold her own with snobby students of privilege and learned much by watching her peers. She later hung fabric on mannequin forms and basted in her relaxed styles which brought her fashion immortality.

The author, who graduated from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, chose Chanel as her somewhat innovative subject for children's picture books. Matthews is sure to have studied much about Coco Chanel and her clever "inventions" of the cartigan suit, and in 1926 "the little black dress." Reviewer mcHaiku isn't quite as old as the famed Chanel No. 5; it contained more than 80 ingredients, a new fact about 'parfum' for this reader. Chanel epitomizes a certain fortitude & determination that we hope young readers will try to replicate.

Perhaps they will remember another of her sayings: "INNOVATION! One cannot be forever innovating. I want to create CLASSICS."

fabulous and inspirational

As a policy I don't give book 5 stars unless they knock me down with their excellence, but this book is great - definitely worthy of purchase.

This is a wonderfully inspirational book for children. I saw it years ago, didn't buy it, but I kept thinking about until I finally bought it recently for my daughters. They love it! It sends very positive messages about being independent, creative, and resourceful.

The primary weakness of the book is its focus on the word "different." What comes out of the biography is Chanel's determination, drive, personal power, and creativity - characteristics that helped her follow her own mind and become "different" as a consequence. Too often in kid's literature and other media, children are exhorted to be "different" and "express themselves" without thinking about what they're doing, and they end up as conformists. Chanel was a thinker, and that made her different from all the other "different" people. By focusing on the word "different", the book sells itself a little short.

Some aspects of Coco Chanel's life during WWII are considered morally questionable, but they've been left out of this book to render a narrative appropriate for children. This is fine for the age group it's targeted for, and the simple story in this book is most effective.

Amazing

The publication quality of the book is unbelievably good. I highly recommend getting the hardcopy book and not just the Kindle version because the book is so realistic, with all the inserts such as a torn newspaper clipping, envelope, postcard, etc, being so perfect (like the newspaper clipping is actual newspaper) that it's hard not to imagine that I have Elliot's actual book in my hands.

The content is pulled together, oddly enough, by comments by Hot Carla written in the margins. Since some of us suspected there was more to Hot Carla than we got from the show, it's nice to learn more about her.

Do not read this book if you haven't at least seen most of season two or you will spoil a plot twist.

I'm normally not one to post reviews. However, after being blow away by the quality of this book, I felt the need to speak up.

As mentioned by others, the quality of this book is so great that I actually thought they sent me a special copy of the handwritten composition notebook used on set! Not only is the text authentic, but the various inserts that come with it put it over the top, blurring the lines between a manufactured book and reality.

I'm a huge fan of Mr.Robert the television show. You NEED this book if you are too.

Also, if you are a fan of the Cloverfield Franchise and have knowledge of the Alternate Reality Game that pairs with that particular franchise, this book is for you! You will feel apart of the Mr. Robert universe. Just make sure not to loose too much of a grip on reality.

Awesome stuff!

I thought it will be a boring book-like-the-movie wannabe book. Turns out it's pretty good. With some off-the-book notes and such, looks so authentic.
All the papers surfaces are flat (except for the hardcover), not it's like has been written by a pen/cils, but the inking was so good!

Day 1: Satisfied with the condition. Haven't read the story yet.

Pretty recommended for Mr. Robot fan!

Required reading for internal change agents

This book is spectacularly useful for internal change agents. The "ten commandments" are must. @1: come to work each day, prepared to be fired. This is the book that puts a label (intrapreneur) on the many change agents in all types of organizational settings. If you are a change agent, operating from withIN an organization, this is required reading for you.

For the intrapreneur, failure is not an option

I read this book when I used to work for Du Pont de Nemours and Gifford Pinchot was the talk of the town. However, the book continues to be up to date. You see, as the years go by, there is a growing need for innovation due to budget cuts.
As a Master Trainer for the UN Entrepreneurship Training Program, I can vouch for the importance of intra-corporate entrepreneurship to help the corporation to grow. The point is, having ideas is not the problem, but implementation of the idea is. The intrapreneur fills the gap between the idea generation process and a successful running of a business. Intrapreneur is who gets the sponsors and normally puts together a winning team to make things happen. If you're serious about never getting a job in which you won't be able to make a real difference, read this book

Concise Guide for Evaluating Stocks

This book is a very concise and readable guide to choosing stocks. It fully acknowledges the difficulties involved in "beating the market" and does not claim to have any magic (and almost certainly false) strategies. It includes a very nice description of the "efficient market hypothesis" and its strength and weaknesses. Mostly, it provides a common sense guide to evaluating financial statements along with questions to ask before buying a stock.

Good For the Dummies Out There

This is the kind of book that you buy when you know little to nothing about a subject. I know little to nothing about the stock market and even less about choosing the right stock. I enjoyed how author Alex Frey explains things in basic layman's terms such as the jargon used in the market. His explanations went towards educating me and nothing pushing a service that he provides. In other words, this isn't another infomercial book.

This book was written well. I am a very beginner stock trader and this book helped me understand more about stocks. Mr.Bytes did a good job keeping the language simple, as well.
