A compelling book which should be required reading for all who want a better America

This is an important book. Etelson takes the metaphor that the ‘strict father’ figure fits the Republican Conservatives’ vision of government and Democratic Progressives the ‘nurturing parent’ one step further. She compellingly argues that cold authoritarian parents produce adults who lack empathy and view the poor with disdain while parents who unconditionally love their children produce adults who advocate for giving a hand up to the less fortunate. Her argument is well-documented. She also documents the case for the importance of touch in infancy.

I was shocked at the nature of best-selling books on parenting, advocating draconian measures such as spanking a child as young as 15 months hard enough to hurt. It is well known that physical abuse contributes to criminal behavior, but the author documents indifference by those raised by overly punitive parents.

Supporting family values is redefined as providing resources for parents to nurture their children rather than limiting who may be called a family. She makes a most convincing case that a better society begins with doing a better job of caring for our young. Further, the dollars invested have a significant return.

One caution: the reader should not allow the author’s lack of acknowledgement that parenting styles fall on a two-dimensional spectrum to discount the message of how important it is to make our children feel loved.

A minor quibble is that ‘unconditional love’ is redundant. Love, in my opinion, is by definition unconditional. I am not sure what it means for a parent to withhold love. One can’t withhold something one doesn’t have. One can withhold approval, and inappropriately conveying “Mommy or Daddy doesn’t love you when you act like that” might be the author’s intent when she talks about withholding love.

Scott Lazenby has been a city manager in Oregon for over two decades, and previously served as management and budget director for a large Arizona city. He also teaches public administration as an adjunct professor for Portland State University. Must read for any public employee

Dr. Lazenby has done a great job of stepping through how the budgeting should be done in all public entities. The book outlines all the budgeting tricks. Most importantly the book shows how to work to stop the tricks being played in a productive management style.

As a practicing CPA I am considering giving this book to my business clients to understand how to really do budgets. There are a lot of tools for profit companies can use.

The book really deserves five starts, but only CPA's and budget people would rate it with five stars, when in fact non-budget management people should read this also.

An excellent alternative to traditional budgeting

The book presents a tightly-reasoned alternative to the frustrating and problematic world of traditional budgeting practices, particularly at the municipal level. For a budgeting book, this is a page-turner; the author's style is clear and direct, which makes the deep and complex arguments in the book easy to follow. If you're looking for a book to help you win at traditional budgeting, this is not the right book for you. If you're looking for a book about a better way to budget, and a book that reaches for a better way of organizing the central functions of governments at all levels, then you will enjoy this book.

Kindle is not grad school friendly

I bought all my books in e book form, four from kindle and seven on a different app. I originally bought this book in kindle because it was less expensive but it was a huge mistake. The lack of page numbers is a huge problem and the missing tables, figures, and information is ridiculous. The "Loc" numbers aren't consistent by any means either. I could site a page, look through other chapters, then go back to the Loc I cited and the info I had originally sited was no longer there. It had moved. I never again will buy a book from kindle.

Very poor picture quality, good information

Terribly disappointed in this book, I found a far superior version of this ebook on inkling with better pictures and search options. Come on Kindle, you should be the market leader in ebooks. I should be able to expect the best quality available, not this disappointingly fuzzy, poorly searchable second rate product.
The book is a good book in the print version but unless kindle can do much better than this I would stay away from the kindle edition.

Great textbook, just don't get it on kindle

I really like this textbook, but don't get the kindle edition. I was not able to effectively search within the textbook. Page numbers were not written on the pages. Fortunately I received a free refund from Amazon and ordered a print copy.

Worthy effort at translation but a little flat

Edward McCrorie's newly published translation of Homer's Iliad was undertaken with the goal of producing a modern English version of the great poem that remains true to the style and pronunciation of the original. Homer's masterpiece of course was recorded in dactyklic hexameters (based on syllable length, not upon stress as would be the case in an English language poem), which is a downbeat meter, rather than an upbeat meter such as iambic characteristic of muct traditional English poetry. McCrorie believes that this Greek "falling" meter was well-suited for the sense of doom that overhangs the Iliad, so he chose to cast his translation into a downbeat meter (usually with five beats to the line), all the while staying a closely as practical to the sounds of the original Greek. I do not flatter myself that I have sufficent command of Homeric Greek to wholly evaluate the degree of McCrorie's success, but at the very least his translation makes full use of the original Homeric form of character names ("Akhilleus" rather than the more usual latinate "Achilles"), with the proper pronunciations detailed in an appendix.

However, it seems to me that as an English language poem McCrorie's translation falls a little short of ideal It lacks that vigorous driving energy found in the best translations of the Iliad. Perhaps word choices have been overly restricted by the translator's desire to remain close to the original Greek sounds, with the result that, however technically accurate the translation may be, there is an absence of immediate vividness to carry the poem along at a rapid pace. My first thought was that this air of flatness might have been the result of the choice of using a downbeat meter, but then I thought back to Rodney Merrill's Iliad translation several years ago, also undertaken with the view of capturing the tone of the original Greek and employing a downbeat hexameter to do so. Merrill's translation, it seems to me, succeeds better as an English language poem than McCrorie's, with a highly desirable central energy and proving to me that a downbeat meter is not inimical to a vigorous translation.

Appreciation of poetry, of course, is an extremely subjective matter. What does not fully appeal to one reader may seem a masterpiece to another. I do believe that McCrorie's Iliad translation is certainly worthwhile to read, even if it may not be the most vivid version of Homer's poem available to the English language reader. Much value is added by introductory essays by the translator and by Erwin Cook, greatly illuminating the nature of the original poem.

essential, fabulous book on accent

If you're looking for a book on accents this has to be the first one to buy. It's clear, informative, systematic and gives you the guidelines and principles for doing ANY accent. It's also playful and very accessible and backs up the text with a cd. A bonus: the book is beautifully designed and illustrated, of high quality paper, and a pleasure to handle. Every actor, acting student and voice teacher should own this, read it, and refer to it as an essential reference book when working on roles.

Constantly Changing the Way I View Accent Work

I already owned Robert Blumenfeld's "Accents: A Manual for Actors" which did fantastic things for my accent work. It's a complete overview of just about any accent you could think of.

However, those guidelines require an actor to already understand healthy accent practices which is what this book covers remarkably. It is constantly changing the way I view accents. Their "You and the New" system is terribly simple, but also terribly vital. This book contains all the necessary foundations required for teaching yourself a new accent: recordings, diagrams, documents, etc. Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Got this for a young thespian

She is always involved in plays and acting - of all things she finds passion in, it is the theater. I got her this book and she told me it was her favorite gift, and an apple product was in that running. Two years later she still uses it, and in more than one performance I've heard a well practiced accent.

The gal I got this for was 11 at the time. Maybe 10? Anyhow, a younger individual and she just adores it.

First, the book addresses whether and how ICTs are bound by human rights law, since unlike states they do not sign or ratify human rights conventions. Second, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the way in which ICTs interpret and apply human rights norms, compared to the way in which these norms are interpreted in a traditional state-context. Relying on the unique circumstances in which they operate, ICTs have often deviated from generally accepted interpretations of human rights. The author critically examines this so-called contextual approach and seeks to recommend ways in which ICTs can improve their interpretative practice by giving due regard to the context in which they operate, while still providing adequate human rights protection.�
Addressing the ICTs’ possible leeway in terms of contextualization, this book contributes to the broader debate about adherence to human rights norms in international law.
