One of my favorite stories. Read dozens of times. Finally replacing my physical book with the e-version.

This book is one of my most favorite Nora Roberts' books.
I have the physical book copy of this novel and years and years of reading and re-reading have curled the pages, cracked the spine, warped the cover and yet the story still sucks me in every time.
I am in process of replacing the majority of my physical books with e-books (I sure wish they'd give us credit or something so you don't have to buy the same book twice at full price, grrr)
Anyways one of the first books to be replaced with an e version is this one, Dance Upon the Air.
As part of a trilogy it is a beautiful first part...but in truth more often than not I read it as a stand alone.
It's not that the plot is so complicated or intense or anything...it's just that what Nora does best, she does in this book. She writes a world that you can drink in lie water. A few pages in you see the world, not the words.
I can't tell you how many times I stepped off the ferry and wandered the high street with the main character.
There have been times I'd leave this book (the physical copy) in a convenient place and just pop it open and read and re-read my favorite scenes.
The description of the cafe and all the baked goods and the kitchen....just perfect. There's something about the way Nora writes, when she's "on" she is soooo on. The world is larger and richer than the few words on the page.
Considering how she likes to weave a little magic in to a lot of her books, this one included, perhaps these novels where she's "on" are her own form of magic, the few simple words together on the page creating something together much grander than it really ought to be...
Anyways, this book is my go to feel good story.
The drama is light, not too intense.
I don't mind intense but when life gets hectic or crazy or down right crappy it's nice to pick up a story that you can slide in to on any page and visit that world.
I am from the East Coast myself originally so perhaps the descriptions of the little village on an island, the trees and water and rocks and salty air just strike a particular chord with me.

I've said before, Nora could write an entire book or books on the day to day mundane goings on in the little cafe book shop and I'd read it.
Sometimes the things she writes about, the most simple are the most effective...

As I said it's part of a trilogy so you sort of have to read all 3 to feel complete.
But this is my favorite of the 3. I'll attach photos of the physical copy so you can see how well loved it is.

Not all of Nora's books are hits for me...in recent years some of them are almost misses. I remarked in another review that I wasn't sure if it was her or me who has changed.
Thus far this story hasn't changed for me, it's familiar and comforting like your favorite blanket :)

I didn't and won't go into plot details, if you like small island life, books and cafe offerings. A bit of mystery a lot of magic and a sweet touch of romance (actual romance!) then you'll like this.

I am thrilled to have the e-book version finally. There is something supremely comforting at knowing I have a ton of Nora stories in one little device that I can carry every where. :)

Oh and one other thought while it's on my mind. I know firt hand how slightly painful it can be to part with physical books. But nostalgia and cost of e-books etc aside, I can say from experience that the physical book is not what you love. It's the story. And a good story, like this one, sucks you in. You'll forget within moments WHAT you're reading on, or even what you're reading. A good story is alive and not bound to paper.
I started reading my new ebook version of Dance Upon the Air and on my tablet and was succcccked right in, as always. :)

Magical.

So far, every single book of Nora Roberts' has been outstanding. Here, she shows that witches are just like ordinary people with something a little extra. I have read every book that she has ever written and have them in my library. Since my hands are arthritic and the print of the book has become tiny to my eyes, that is the reason that I am writing this. This series is an old time favorite and I have read it often, that is how great her books are.

What a beautiful find! The story of Three Sisters Island was just amazing! Filled with mystery, witches, folk lore, and self discovery. The way the author describes the Island you can just see it alive in your mind! With it's main characters, three direct descendants of the original three witches of the Island, and throw in the townsfolk who live there set in motion the beginning of this trilogy that's sure to delight anyone who loves witchy stories. I'm so excited to have found this story and can't wait to read onto the next installment!!

About the Author
Enrico Martignetti graduated in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in 1993. He has been working as a software developer since 1990 and has been cultivating a strong interest on the Windows architecture since the late nineties, when he decided, quite short-sightedly, to study the kernel of Windows 98. He then moved to the Windows NT family kernel in 2001 and has been trying to make sense of it ever since.

A practical WinDbg tutorial

I was very pleased to find out this book that uses WinDbg as OS reversing tool. Not only you learn a very important aspect of Windows internals related to crash and hang memory dump analysis (all crash processing starts from memory manager) but you also learn many WinDbg commands from practical reversing experiments. I was even more pleased to find the output of WinDbg command on the page 0, before even the table of contents.

Excellent

For this book - I will ignore my usual pet peeve of misspellings and grammar errors. There are plenty of them. But the content more than makes up for it. Kudos to the author for reversing so much knowledge out of Windows by using WinDgb. God knows how long it must have taken him to do that. It is a very thorough and detailed examination of the VMM. I don't think you can find any other book with more detail about this particular subject out there.

In much need of an editor

I picked up this book based on the very positive reviews on Amazon. I'm still reading through it so I will skip content review for now. I'll update the review later.

However, the editing leaves much to be desired. Judging from the sparse publishing information provided in the book it looks like the book was edited and published by the author. This is by no means a bad thing in and of itself, but in this case it shows how hard it can be to make a technical text accessible. The text is littered with errors which makes it hard to follow at times. There are not many books on this subject, so I'm willing to forgive a lot but even if the content turns out to be brilliant the book could have been so much better with the help of a skilled editor. I recommend reading some of the preview text available on Amazon to get an idea of the readability of the text.

The appendix lists numerous publications and blog posts by Mark Russinovich as references. Given the quality of the text I would recommend checking these out before turning to this book.

In the past 30 years , there have been three major encyclopedic Bible dictionaries published in English: The Interpreter's Bible Dictionary (IBD ), the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible , and The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia ( ISBE ). When it was published in 1962 (with a supplementary volume in 1976), the IBD represented the state of critical Biblical scholarship. The ISBE , though an extensive revision of the previous edition (1929), retained many articles from its predecessors (1915 and 1929). Because of the numerous developments in biblical scholarship during the past three decades, the editor felt (rightly) that it was time for a Bible dictionary that would represent the current state of the discipline. The Anchor Bible Dictionary ( ABD ) is the result of his vision. The ABD is both international and interconfessional, with nearly 1000 contributors from around the world representing Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim traditions (and also those of no religious tradition). The list of contributing scholars includes names long associated with biblical and theological studies. The currency of the dictionary as a whole is reflected especially in the inclusion of such subjects as the Dead Sea Scrolls, early Jewish-Christian relations, the historical Jesus, and sociological and literary methods of biblical criticism (including feminist hermeneutics), and in numerous entries on archaeological sites. In addition, the bibliographies are usually up to date and often extensive. Unlike previous Bible dictionaries, the bibliographic entries in the ABD are complete citations, listed individually rather than in a run-on fashion, and hence easier to use. Even in such a monumental success as the ABD , there are weak spots. One might expect to find pronunciations, especially for place and personal names--which is the case with the IBD and the ISBE --but none are given here. There are few illustrations throughout. The maps are inadequate, and some of the topics are handled clumsily. Yet overall, this is a solid piece of work, well written and well edited. It will serve scholars and students because of its currency and thoroughness and lay readers because of its generally readable style. The ABD deserves a place on the shelves beside the standard Bible dictionaries of previous generations and is recommended for public, academic, and seminary libraries.

Best Bible ENCYCLOPEDIA I have seen so far.

`The Anchor Bible Dictionary', at six (6) rather large volumes, is probably the most authoritative encyclopedia on Christian Biblical matters. And, let us be clear about the fact that it is quite definitely NOT a dictionary in the same sense as the excellent `New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology' edited in its English translation from the German by Colin Brown and `Theological Dictionary of the New Testament', edited in German and completed around 1933 by Gerhard Kittel, and translated into English by Geoffrey W. Bromiley, which has 10 huge volumes filled with a wealth of information. Both of these are true dictionaries, dealing with Greek terms and their meanings in ancient Greek literature, Hebrew scriptural translations into Greek, and New Testament Greek.
The Anchor volumes are far more like the single volume `HarperCollins Bible Dictionary' which is also a misnamed encyclopedia. Whether you purchase the Anchor or the HarperCollins may depend (aside from financial resources) on whether you plan to use the book `on the road', as in a Sunday Bible Study class. Another reason for passing on the Anchor volumes is if you happen to live within walking distance or easy driving distance of a good library, or even a modest library dedicated to Christian study, as you may find in a local church. Every municipal, college, and church library I have seen has a copy of `The Anchor Bible Dictionary'.
To state the obvious, the Anchor clearly has more information in it than HarperCollins, as it is literally six times longer. Among other things, this means that for `Torah', for example, you get a bit over one and a half pages in HarperCollins, while you get eighteen (18) pages, or about nine times as much information, plus a very good bibliography, which is absent from the HarperCollins article. And, for each book of the Bible, you essentially get a thumbnail commentary and outline, probably good enough for most, unless you intend to study that book in detail. This does not mean the HarperCollins has no bibliographies. It does, but it is not with every long article.
On smaller articles, the Anchor also tends to be a bit better than the HarperCollins. I have run across many minor (single occurrence) proper names in the New Testament which are simply not in HarperCollins, but which are in the Anchor. There may not be much to say, but at least you may get an etymology and a proper pronunciation.
I know there are other reputable Bible `encyclopedias' available, but I am fairly sure these two are the best. And, in the end, it may all come down to your wallet. Both are good choices, but the Anchor is unquestionably more complete and better for many purposes.

Good reference dictionary, but not for the faint of heart. it presents all views on the topic, so if you are a newbie to bible study this is not for you, not too many picture.

Wrong Binding in Volume 6

I would have been very satisfied with my purchase of the six volumes of the Anchor Bible Dictionary. I was however surprised and disappointed that proper attention was not given to binding such a high quality publication. The Hard cover and the first page and last page (Front and back) were turned upside down to the effect that when the book is opened frommthe front cover, the first page seen is the last page of the book turned upside down and all the other pages follow that pattern to the last page which is actually the first page of the book. I wander how such a mistake could have been ignored by the publishers and the books sold out in such a condtion.

What did I just read?

I knew it was micro-essays, but you'd think that they could at least have a bit more content to them. Most of them felt like they were written as a half-baked ramble that slipped out after a dinner party in which the author drank too much wine and received too much encouragement. The claim that STEM majors need more liberal arts background is all too apparent in this compilation, as many of the essays were almost incomprehensible or stale (even at 3 pages!). However, I did thoroughly enjoy Jared Diamond's pokes at the very question Edge.org posed, and Nowak's sore jab at "the cult" of inclusive fitness researchers (if you don't know about that whole fiasco with the petition against his work, it's a juicy piece of scientist poo-flinging).

I still like the idea. It is a conflicting set of teasers of "well-supported" opinions from scientists in diverse disciplines, aka an Ivy League Scientist gossip mag.

Or, rather, it's a snippet of 175 scientists' views, allowing one to decide whether or not to completely avoid that scientist or follow up on their work. Daniel Goleman still pisses me off, and it's nice to have that affirmed after 10 years, for example.

Overall, 3 stars. Mostly because it entertained me for the evening and gave me a few scientists to look into. Yet what sounded like insightful criticisms of paradigms fell very flat most of the time, and nothing really knocked my socks off, so I didn't learn as much as I'd hoped I would. I recommend reading the following essays from the book (or at least, I thought they were more coherent, well thought or nice contributions):

"The Universe Began in a State of Extraordinarily Low Entropy" Alan Guth (entropy is always fun)
"Entropy" Bruce Parker (entropy is always fun pt. 2, but this guy doesn't get it)

"Big Data" Gary Marcus (especially in conjunction with "The Scientific Method")
"Bias Is Always Bad" Tom Griffiths
"Unbridled Scientific and Technological Optimism" Stuart Pimm (though a bit weak at the end)
"Inclusive Fitness" Martin Nowak (just for the giggles)
"New Ideas Triumph by Replacing Old Ones" Jared Diamond (also for giggles)

I was really looking forward to this. I had imagined it was a half dozen or dozen essays from some of the renowned authors cited in the blurbs. Well, sure, it could hardly be a comprehensive essay from any of them, but it would be provocative light reading leading to more in-depth adventures, I hoped. Imagine my dissapointment when it arrived and had nearly 200 essays! A few are one or two paragraphs, the most complete about two and a half pages! I've looked at about 20 mostly from people I know or subjects I follow. Based on that sample I can state what is perhaps obvious: no really informative content on subjects like the mind/matter controversy or the nature of science can be presented in such a format. In fact some of them, for instance Dennet on consciousness, are just gooblygook, so why did he bother? I'm giving it a 3 because if you're prepared for what it is, I can see reading it in an airplane or something. Otherwise, save your money. My mistake in not being up on pop intellectualism; it seems to be one of a series of such collections of "essays".

A mix of clear argument and unsupported opinion

John Brockton was an early participant in the TED conferences, which started out as a series of thoughtful inquiries at the edge of science, but which have morphed into a sort of semi-scientific Moth show, in which people from science, politics, and show business present shallow, preferably heart-warming tales with an often tenuous connection to science. Benjamin Bratton called TED "middlebrow megachurch infotainment" which I think sums it up well. Brockman also regularly (every six months or so) releases a volume of essays that also purport to be deep intellectual works, but are typically (but not always) short, shallow, essays in the same mold as the TED talks, and that can be skimmed through without too much thought. Some of the ideas found in this book are thoughtful, and worth pondering; some are so oversimplified as to be worthless.

In the former group I'd put Max Tegmark's essay on infinities, which, at 4 pages in length, is one of the longer essays in the book. In the second, Michael Shermer's essay, which seems to be simultaneously displaying the author's lack of knowledge who tilting at windmills. Many are not arguments, just opinions or argument without evidence. The opening essay, in which Geoffrey West argues agains the search for a grand unification, consists of three pages of history, and an argument presented in one assertion: The dynamics of complex systems are too complicated to be encompassed in one equation, or even a finite number of equations. Well, perhaps; but merely asserting that doesn't help the reader understand it. Some seem to be arguing against positions no one actui=ally holds, like Buddhini Samarasinghe passionate argument against the notion that "Scientists should stick to science"- seriously, is anyone really making that argument in the public forum anymore?

One particularly annoying essay is Sean Carroll's diatribe against falsifiability, in which he manages to completely misrepresent Popper's notion of falsifiability. Carroll states that falsifiability is the idea that a scientific theory is only acceptable if it can muster evidence to prove what it asserts. Quoting:

"String theory and other approaches to quantum gravity involve phenomena that are likely to manifest themselves only at energies enormously higher than anything we have access to here on Earth... Some scientists, leaning on Popper, have suggested that these theories are non-scientific because they are not falsifiable."

But to say that is to misunderstand Popper. Popper's idea of falsifiability is intended to demarcate what kinds of statements are the realm of science, and which are not. In order for a statement or theory to be accessible to scientific method, it must include or imply in principle a methodology by which it can be disproven. Note that distinction. When Democrates proposed, sometime around the 5th Century BC, that all things are made up of indivisible parts that define their nature, he had no way of testing it. Confirmation of the atomic theory had to wait another seven hundred years. So was Democrates' assertion non-falsifiable? No, because it was stated in a manner such that one could conceivably find counterexamples. So it is with string theory; given the right tools, we should find (or not find) the hidden dimensions curled up at some small scale.

But you'd never know that from Carroll's essay. He sums up Popper in one short sentence, and he gets it wrong. That's unfortunately the pattern of so many of these essays- the non-specialist reader has no idea of the context of most of the ideas presented and has no way to judge them. What we have, then, is a mixture of well presented ideas, misconceptions, and unsupported opinions, and it's up to the reader to figure out which is which.

Waste of money honestly but if you want to see a sample email me

Waste of money honestly. Just get the old version for like a 1/100th of the price and you will be good. I found the explanations very convoluted, and they could be argued against. They dont give a clear explanation and just overall not worth the extra money to get the newest edition. In every passage theres atleast 2-3 problems where you're like "the answer i picked is a better answer." Not even close to being representative of AAMC cars because the right answer is not always the best answer. Regardless, if you want to see some examples

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

It was very child like and the relationships in this story are so superficial. The friendships are not going to last past high school based on the jealousy and easy hatred the girls have. The connection between the hero and heroine was thin and they barely talked except to make sure we all knew that no matter that he seems the strong, silent, shy type, he really hooked up randomly with girls and told his brother all about them. Then we are supposed to believe that after one day with the heroine, he has changed??? Whatever. It mentioned him hooking up with a girl the previous month and now he wants the heroine for life??? This book shows how stupid people are when it comes to relationships and am upset I wasted time reading it.

Losing It - Loved It

This book really surprised me. I thought it would be a more superficial look at high school girls and the games they play with boys, but it was a very deep look at friendship, family and falling in love with the one person you never thought you would. It is shorter - I read it in one night - but I think it's perfect at this length. Not too long and drawn out and not too short. While I would have loved to hear more from the characters (an epilogue?) the story ends with a satisfying conclusion.

Should you buy it? Oh yeah, it's GREAT!

A short story, really cute and romantic.
Easy and fast to read, It took me only 4 hours (and I'm a slower reader). It was predictable, you can easy guess what's going to happened, but if like romantic books you will like this book.

(I recommended you Bound Together by the same author, it's better that this).

If you have free time you should read losing it it's a nice story.
