Another Wonderful Story

I thoroughly enjoyed DMM. I love ghost stories, and this one delivers. It's a journey through present, past and back to present. At some parts of the story, I could feel my heart pounding right along with Rebecca. I would gasp at all the right moments and sigh at the all the mushy parts -which the book has plenty of. There is also L.T.'s humour thrown about in there. If there is anything you can count on, it's L.T. making you laugh. The characters are so beautiful and you leave the story wondering about them and what they'd be up to right now. L.T. Smith is one of those writers who doesn't know she's brilliant. It makes her stories that much better. L.T. has made some changes from the original version, but they are good ones. I don't want to give too much away as there are twists and turns that are much more fun to discover on your own. Just trust me when I say this is definitely worth the read - which I am going to go back and do again now.

Brilliant, witty, engaging are adjectives that could easily describe L.T. Smith's latest novel Driving Me Mad. Right from the beginning I was thrown into a wild ride featuring endearing characters both living and dead. This book was a romance with a heavy paranormal influence. To sum it up quickly, damn good storytelling!

Rebecca Gibson is a paper salesman. One night driving from one sales convention to the next, she gets lost. An easy two hour drive becomes four and she still is no closer to her intended destination. While trying to get her bearings in the middle of nowhere, way past midnight, things just get plain crazy.

Rebecca is an interesting character that is grounded, loves her work and doesn't have very many friends. She is all work with little play. She is also hilarious, her internal dialogue is fantastic. Her wittiness is laugh out loud worthy. So, when a paranormal presence throws her into the past, lets just say she freaks out big time, and drops some epic curse words. She thinks she has gone cuckoo, and rightfully so.

Our other alive main character is Clare Davies. Clare is the direct descendant to both of our ghostly friends, Annabel and Ellen. Past lovers who were ripped about by Ellen's murder.

Both Rebecca and Clare are thrown into the past and haunted by ghosts in order to solve the mystery and uncover the truth of what happened to Ellen over sixty years ago. Annabel and Ellen must be put to rest and Rebecca and Clare have been chosen for the task, whether they like it or not.

I literally could not put this book down. I was invested right from the beginning. L.T. Smith got me hooked almost instantly, and that's no easy task. This book starts out at full speed and does not step off the pedal until the very end.

Great book, fantastic dialogue, interesting story with numerous twists and turns. What a great adventure this book was!

the perfect book to be snowed in with...

L.T. Smith's Driving Me Mad is not only unique and complex in plot, it offers characters you care about a lot and would not mind knowing in real life. This is right up there with her terrific and very endearing novel, See Right Through Me. And though the mystery itself pulls you in immediately and is "on the edge of your seat" compelling, it is the emotions and the vulnerability swirling throughout, so open and wonderfully, that are deeply affecting and have lingered with me long after finishing. Who among us, after all, has not felt this way as we struggle with our hearts and the feelings within them?:

"Did it bother me? Did I want to run away screaming into the hills? Yes and no. Yes, because I had never allowed anyone to get that close to me before. I had never let guard down long enough for anyone to see the real me, quivering in fear. I was scared that when Clare could see who I actually was, she wouldn’t be interested in someone like me."

No one is immune to heartache and L.T. Smith is such a gifted writer because she can so beautifully capture on page the very things we secretly feel but are not always willing or able to express ourselves. It felt like forever for Driving Me Mad to be released and the wait is well, well worth it!!

Wish I'd known about this book years ago

OUTSTANDING book. It should be extremely helpful to my non-native English-speaking students, and I will recommend it enthusiastically to them. And even native English-speakers don't necessarily have a good sense of how to write scientific papers, so it will be very useful for them as well.

This is the first book that I have bought on science research writing. I browsed through the contents of other similar books online on Amazons and found that most of them seemed a little complicated to use. I bought this book for my students who are postgraduate students from China. The book is very useful for non-native speakers, it explains with examples and the lists of vocabularies are clear and easy to use.

The Beginning of Sorrows and the End of the Age

Not since THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST given to the apostle John on the Isle of Patmos some 1900 years ago has there been a more awe-inspiring vision concerning the end of our presint age than the predictive material presented in THE VISION: A TERRIFYING PROPHECY OF DOOMSDAY THAT IS STARTING TO HAPPEN NOW! (New York: Pyramid Books, 1974) by David Wilkerson. This 143-page "mass-market paperback" edition has as its contents: an Introduction, eight chapters, and two appendices describing the details of a vision experienced by the now emeritus Pastor Wilkerson (Times Square Church, New York City) during a late-night time of prayer in April 1973.

In the first five chapters, readers will learn about the "five tragic calamities coming upon the earth." In order: (1) "Economic Confusion" with sevety-three related predictions; (2) "Drastic Weather Changes and Earthquakes" with fifty-four predictions; (3) "A Flood of Filth" (an allusion to moral collapse) containing ninety-two predictions; (4) "The Number One Youth Problem of the Future" with thirty-six predictions; and (5) "Persecution Madness" against 'born-again' Christians and 'Spirit-baptized' Roman Catholics with ninety-one predictions. These 'prediction counts' are my own, and are taken informally from the narrative text and may vary from reader-to-reader, but are helpful indicators of emphasis. Serving illustrative purpose are a number of related biblical predictions of God's judgments upon Israel and Judah in the eighth and sixth centuries B.C. These biblical references to God's judgments are NOT included in my informal chapter-by-chapter prediction counts.

I had heard about this little book off-and-on since the mid-seventies, but had never managed to read it for myself until March 2007. Many of the predicted developments and events do not now seem nearly as remote as they did to some when it was first published back in 1974. By my own cursory reckoning, it seems that nearly 50% of the predictions have been fulfilled at this date of writing (12/22/08) leaving approximately as many still to be fulfilled in the near future. Indications are increasingly strong--in all five categories--that the remaining predictions will be realized in this "present generation" as Wilkerson predicts. Saint Paul's analogy of a pregnant woman coming to full-term is an important simile to remember when evaluating the progress of end-time events--allowing as it does for a long, almost imperceptible growth (or degradation in the case of the end of this age) ultimately climaxing with numerous increasingly strong and painful contractions before the actual birth takes place (cf., 1 Thessalonians 5:3).

Because I believe this "vision" to be a genuine revelation from God for the sake of believers and unbelievers alike, I highly recommend it be read by everyone concerned about "the signs of the times" and how they relate to God's judgments upon the United States of America and the world-at-large; the physical return of Jesus Christ to establish his kingdom on earth; and the end of this present age.

Instructions have been provided by the seer/author to assist, both, "the prepared" and "the unprepared" on how to best conduct their lives in the face of the difficult times ahead. As the Hebrew prophet, Habakkuk, was assured by God concerning the certainty of the coming devastation at the hands of the invading Babylonians upon the nation of Judah, so Wilkerson invokes the ancient exhortation to patience as part of his epigraph: "For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry" (Habakkuk 2:2-3, KJV).

The Vision impacted my life

I heard about David Wilkerson's vision in the early 70's and in fact had a copy of the album (yes album) he delivered it to a Lutheran conference in the early 70's in Minneapolis, MN. It had a profound affect on me and my husband and in fact I still recall the dire predictions and have seen many come true over the years.

You don't have to agree with Wilkerson's religion, but you should read the vision as an insight into what the Lord was revealing to him. He was obedient to deliver it to the church and if the church is so apostate that it can't receive it (which is exactly what was in the vision back in 1973) God help us!

I'm going to take a refresher course and re-read "The Vision" because so much has come true already. The great upheavals in the weather (Hello Katrina) the homosexual movement, the extreme change in the family (no one would have believed it true back in the 70's-remember The Wonder Years, that's how we looked at things). It is definately a "vision" that God has given the church to help her make sense of the things to come, and I have used it as such over the past 22 years. I recommend it, and you can decide for yourself if it hasn't been right on the money these past 20 some years.

Amazing!

This plan is by far the healthiest, most effective way to lose weight out there. I've been following this plan--with the occasional addition of pasta/bread when the need arose--with incredible results. I've lost 45 lbs within 4 months, and I look/feel better than ever! But the weight loss isn't the only thing I've gained; I've also gained a greater knowledge of the health benefits of veganism. There's evidence out there that indicates that a plant-based low-fat diet--such as this one--may reduce the effects of aging, reverse and prevent heart disease, prevent cancer, and cure a host of other maladies. Thanks to Dr. McDougall, I can look forward to a long, healthy, happy life! The benefits can be seen right here and right now too: I have more energy than ever, and I'm getting several second glances from all of the cute guys around here ;)
My word of advice to those considering this plan is this: just give it a shot. Give it, say, 3 weeks. If at the end of 3 weeks you don't like it, then quit. If you do like it, then continue with it and enjoy the amazing benefits of following this program! You have nothing to lose.
If you're intimidated by those that say you need meat or dairy in your diet to be healthy...don't be. Several civilizations throughout history have followed this low-fat vegetarian diet throughout the ages out of necessity. The peoples of Asia and Africa, plus the millions of the working class in the olden days, ate a diet similar to this one and experienced none of the health problems that we do today. And that's better proof of the healthfulness of this diet than any laboratory can provide!

This is a great, ground-breaking book!

Being an overweight woman in her 40s, I have lots of experience with trying and failing to lose fat, and with the misery entailed in the process. Dr. McDougall's book has the first system I have found that I really feel I can happily follow, not just to lose weight, but for the rest of my life in order to stay healthy and maintain my weight loss. At first I was startled by what Dr. McDougall had to say about nutrition, but I have found in practice that his claims are correct. My energy level took a big leap forward within two days, and I just keep feeling better all the time. In my experience, losing weight with this system is unbelievably easy and painless, and your food can be as simple or as gourmet as you want to make it. In the past I tried the Atkinson high protein diet (the most opposite one to this!), and even if I did temporarily lose some weight, I couldn't wait to get off that diet and start eating real food again, and I felt very unhealthy on it after a few weeks. On the other hand, I find the McDougall diet to be extremely satisfying, and as a bonus my skin and hair (dried out by the Nevada climate for years now) have become healthy again, and I have more energy and vitality than in years. Also important is that following the McDougall diet ensures that you minimize the toxicities you get from your food (see Howard Lyman's book "Mad Cowboy" for further information on that aspect!). It really feels good to improve your health, do what is right ecologically, and even lose weight as a bonus and keep it off! Everyone should do themselves the favor of reading and trying for themselves this or another of Dr. McDougall's books.

Good reference, but very strict.

In this book, McDougall delineates and refines his basic program to help increase weight loss. His books generally deal with heart disease reversal through diet. For both heart disease treatment and weight loss, this book is a good reference ONLY if you are able to stick to your committment to it. It has very clear guidelines that DO work if followed correctly.
Vegans will appreciate the all-vegan approach. Lacto-Ovo vegetarians who are not ready to go vegan may appreciate Dean Ornish's work more -- similar concepts to treating heart disease and obesity through controlled diet, but his program allows dairy and egg products where McDougall does not. People who are accustomed to eating meat will find neither Ornish nor McDougall's programs encouraging it as a food choice. It will NOT fit in with these programs, and if you are not willing to forgo meat you may find difficulty sticking to the diet. It has to be a lifestyle change, something you are willing to do forever to treat and control your heart disease/obesity.
The book contains menu plans and recipes along with the basic guidelines for the program. I find the recipes ok, but not fabulous because they lean heavily toward the "southwest" or "tex-mex" type food. They are easy to make, I just happen to not be a fan of tex-mex type food! Instead I bought the book as a reference and found other vegan cookbooks that suited my tastebuds better.
People who like to cook will find this no problem. People who are used to eating frozen entrees or eating out all the time may find difficulty learning how to cook and manage their time to be able to prepare their own meals. The book does give tips on how to best eat out in restaurants and still stick to the program, but overall, expect to have to at least cook a little. A lifestyle change does imply changing some habits.
Whether or not you like the book or find it useful will largely depend on how clearly you have your goals in mind and how far you are willing to change to achieve them.
I gave it 4 stars because while I liked it and it works for me, I can see where it will not work for my non-vegetarian spouse and may cause him frustration. He is simply not ready to go that extra mile at this time and give up meat.

Although my wife and I have just started reading this book it has already proved to be very insightful and extremely helpful in rebuilding a troubled relationship. I would definitely recommend this book for every couple to read, whether your newlyweds or been married for 40 years this book will help bring you closer to your spouse. For those marriages in crisis, please take the time to read this book together with your spouse it may just be the thing that can save your relationship.

Sound, Solid Advice

This volume is sound, solid advice for married couples. While most of the tips and insights here offer few ideas that are new to books on Christian marriage, the way in which they are arranged is refreshingly original. The authors are right on target when they claim that the greatest enemy facing marriages today is isolation. Other resources touch upon this danger, but this work focuses upon it. It's not a great book, but it's very good.

Solid advice, but nothing new

Dennis and Barbara Rainey's book on how to avoid isolation in marriage is entertaining, and Scripturally based. That alone makes it better than most books written for the Christian market. But it's another version of the same marital advice you can find in a host of other books. It's not a bad place to start for new Christians or newlyweds. But if you have made a point of reading and attending conferences to keep your marriage strong, you'll find nothing groundbreaking here.
