The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Everything Your Coach Never Told You Because You're A Girl by Dan Blank might just as well be titled "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: If Clint Eastwood was Your Coach". It's a classic, it's a 5 star show, and it will never be old. I'll be hanging onto this book and reading it again and again whenever I think I've lost my competitive edge and need a few good reminders about what it takes to be a winner.

I use to play but now I coach. I've read every book Dan Blank has written so far except for Happy Feet and this is one of his best (BTW all of his books are excellent). While the title of this book implies it's just for girls, in fact I found it's loaded with stuff my coach never told me and I'm a boy. Perhaps coaches never told me "truths about winning" because they assumed somehow I instinctively knew how to be an outlaw. I believe this book is just as relevant for boys as it is for girls however nobody has ever written something like this for girls, at least that I know of and that makes this book bodacious.

There's no "beating around the bush" writing here, from the get go Blank goes straight into the psyche of serious competitors and it's not dressed up in the slightest. I read Dan Blank's other books rather quickly (they're hard to put down) but this book was a tough read for me because I wasn't prepared for its intensity. Temporarily I found I had turned into a full-time competitor, something normal society does not considered as acceptable behavior. Dan Blank mentions this in the book i.e. the arena of competition versus normal everyday society. The problem was, I was on Chapter 20 titled "Be the Bully" and I became the bully. I wanted to win everything and it didn't matter who I was competing against, whether it was fair, or if the other person even knew it was a competition. I checked my attitude soon enough and continued reading this book in smaller doses, there's a lot of power written in these pages that could mess you up mentally (that or I'm just weak and worship this guy).

Dan Blank deserves a lot credit in my opinion for having the courage to write this book. I think he has possibly opened himself up to receive criticism from the coaching community, especially from the youth coaching community. It's important to keep in perspective this book is for college soccer players. If you've read any of his books it's obvious he's a very passionate college soccer coach who has a unique and valuable perspective about competition that anyone would enjoy and learn from reading. If you are a competitive player this book will only make you better and I highly recommend it. If you're like me and have transitioned into coaching (youth coaching) I also highly recommend this book but you may also want to read "Changing the Game" by John O'Sullivan as a companion just to keep balance within the force. Dan Blank is the Sith Lord of winning and John O'Sullivan is Yoda, you'll meet your destiny when you are ready and there's no reason to face your father when you are only 9, never getting the chance to face him when you are in your prime.

This is an amazing book that will make you think and ponder "The Meaning of Life" (Chapter 33). I wonder if there are any secrets he didn't give away in this book? Lastly, please don't buy this book as I'd prefer to have the advantage if we ever meet in the arena of competition when I destroy you without regret or remorse, laugh when you cry, and rub it in during my interview. Thanks for writing another fantastic book.

Excellent Book, Unlike Any Other

Excellent book with a perspective like no other. As a high school girls' soccer coach, I've read tons of books and articles on the topic of coaching women/girls. This book offers a unique perspective that I have not seen in any of those other books. I started using the ideas/concepts right away with my team and I intend to encourage my players to read the book. This book is invaluable for any female athlete and coach of female athletes.

This is not a book for everyone. As a coach I really love it however some parents will not want their daughters to act in the way some of the players in stories act. That being said I gave it a 5 star because it isn't for every player. It is for the players that really want to compete and be a great player.

About the Author
James Peoples is professor of Sociology/Anthropology and Director of East Asian Studies at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he has been teaching courses in anthropology since 1988. He has also taught in the anthropology departments of the University of California at Davis and the University of Tulsa. His geographic area of specialty is Micronesia, where he studied the impact of American subsidies on the island agricultural and cash economies. His first book, ISLAND IN TRUST (1985), summarized the results of this field research. Since becoming Director of East Asian Studies in 2004, Dr. Peoples has journeyed to Korea and Japan for seminars and workshops. He recently published a chapter, translated into Chinese, in a book used in cultural anthropology courses in the People's Republic of China. He has published most of the results of a comparative analysis of political evolution in Micronesia. Dr. Peoples also has co-authored ESSENTIALS OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY and INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY.

A well-known specialist in Native American cultures, Garrick Bailey has authored numerous scholarly works including A HISTORY OF THE NAVAJOS, with Roberta Bailey (1986), THE OSAGE AND THE INVISIBLE WORLD (1995) and ART OF THE OSAGE, with Daniel Swan (2004). He is currently editor of Volume 2, INDIANS IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY, THE HANDBOOK OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS. Dr. Bailey received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. He also is the co-author of ESSENTIALS OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY and INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY. He teaches anthropology at the University of Tulsa.

Even if i wasn't taking an Anthropology class I would still buy this book. It gives so much information about real cultures around the world that Anthropologists observed.

Brilliant addition to the story

I was quite excited about this one after having finished the first book. The first story finds Caiterina establish herself as the Captain of a ruthless crew of pirates, sinners all- no room for saints aboard ship. Elizabeth Bromley is the love interest who is initially a captive.
You would think that aboard ship it might be a sign of weakness for the pirate Captain to keep a delicate woman of the upper classes aboard ship and in some ways you get that little bit of tension which is explored through the presence of other women coming aboard. But there is a neat balance kept in this one as Elizabeth is taken and Caiterina must find her while keeping an unruly band of women onboard and maintaining discipline. It gets kind of exciting and tense aboard ship, especially later on as we come to see that Elizabeth brings her own kind of trouble.
We also unravel a bit more about the sordid history of Elizabeth's family which isn't quite as squeaky clean as she thought it was.
The second book does what it was supposed to do. Come this point I've seen enough depth and a broadening of the plot with so much more potential for misadventure and mayhem on the open seas or even on land if need be. I would like another one.

Such an adventure!

I so loved this sequel. It was full of adventure. Kidnapping, death. The anger of a captain at the loss of her love kept me on the edge of my seat. My stomach was in knots at points and I wanted to cry! Will the Captain be able to get her lover Lady Elisabeth back? The twist at the end was so unexpected. I love a great private adventure and this one pulled me in and took me along for the ride!!

Steve Anson, CISSP, EnCE, is the cofounder of Forward Discovery. He has conducted computer forensic examinations for numerous local, state, and federal agencies on a variety of cases, as well as testified in court as a computer forensics expert. He has taught computer forensics courses for Guidance Software and is currently a Senior Forensic Consultant with Forward Discovery. Ryan Johnson, DFCP, CFCE, EnCE, SCERS, is a Senior Forensic Consultant with Forward Discovery. Great overview of incident response forensics

Mastering Windows Network Forensics and Investigations fills an interesting niche not well addressed in the pantheon of digital forensics resources. The material is well suited for beginning and intermediate forensic examiners looking to better understand network artifacts and go beyond single-system forensics. I highly recommend it for system administrators looking for a different perspective on network security or those interested in designing networks to be forensics-friendly. That said, the topics covered do not fit within the classical definition of network forensics. A more apt title might be Mastering Incident Response Forensics and Investigations.

This is the first book I have read in the Sybex Mastering series, and I was impressed with the writing, research, and editing. The authors blended dense material with relevant examples and insightful and engaging text boxes.

Some highlights:

- The event log coverage was excellent; a difficult and prosaic topic was explained in simple terms and with just the right amount of depth. One of my favorite sections included the recovery of event log fragments from free space.

- The chapters on the Windows registry were excellent and had space for rarely talked about advanced concepts like volatile hives, registry redirection and reflection, and registry virtualization.

- The investigative uses of XP Restore Points and Windows 7 Shadow Volumes tied in nicely with other topics.

- The new chapter on virtualization and cloud forensics is a good addition. Live response and data acquisition in virtualized environments like VMWare ESX was covered, and an intelligent discussion on how to prepare for collecting cloud data was started.

In this second edition (released in June 2012), it is obvious the authors took pains to include the most current information available. Windows 7, Server 2008R2, and their associated artifacts are discussed extensively. Guidance Software's EnCase v7 and Volatility 2.0 are both introduced. There are even references to computer crime cases occurring in 2012.

Don't let the name fool you. This one has much more to offer than the name might imply.

One of my new favorite forensic books. I strongly recommend this book for Windows forensics in general, not just for networks. Great explanations of various Windows artifacts, file systems, and much more. The network related topics are covered equally as well. The book is very well written in a way that is both understandable and engaging. This book can work for experts and those starting out as well. An excellent addition to anyone's forensic library.

This is an amazing book. It is well written and straight to the point. It covers every area of the windows operating system that you should expect to find evidence and paint a picture of what the bad guys did during a breach (or whatever else you are investigating). I would recommend this book 10 times over. There are plenty of screenshots and tutorials to review and the websites has data to practice on.

This engaging book explores "soul" and "spirit" as experienced and expounded upon by two creative geniuses whose works, and living examples, are of enormous significance for our time: C.G. Jung and Rudolf Steiner.
As one familiar with the works of both men but an expert on neither, I enjoy Gerhard Wehr's perspective and generous style. Absorbing his take on their biography, key ideas, and methods is like hearing favorite musical pieces interpreted by a previously unknown but gifted and seasoned conductor; their life comes forward anew, encouraging subtler reflection, even when I end up seeing differently or would opt for a different vocabulary.
Jung & Steiner is a trio, really: an introduction by Robert Sardello, Wehr's text, and then an appendix with three lectures on "Riddles of the Soul" by Hans Erhard Lauer. It should be enormously helpful to depth psychologists and anthroposophists alike, and virtually any Westerner seriously interested in discovering individual and collective spiritual potentials.
Robert Sardello's introduction is worth the price of admission by itself, and gains in power and value when reread after completing the book. Sardello sets the stage by offering that "Steiner followed the spirit side of the Grail myth; Jung on the soul side," then he makes a strong case for why we need to call upon both methods in our current crisis situation. His mature observations on distinguishing love and desire, and working intelligently with both, are wise and fertile.
Wehr's text compares similarities and differences in the conceptual shells of the two systems in admirable detail. More significantly, though, it juxtaposes core insights of these two prolific geniuses in a way that coaxes something new from the tension between them.
With profound respect for the integrity of both men, Wehr treats the concepts they produced as accurately expressing concrete experiences of their respective realms of expertise. While he finds many commonalities, their broad divergences may prove more useful—to the extent that they help us distinguish the voices of psyche and spirit in ourselves.
Wehr's Jung is fundamentally a physician, focused on healing mental disturbances, receptively tuning in to deeper experiences of psyche to midwife needed changes in a patient's conscious attitude or structure, generally reluctant to speculate (though with notable exceptions) what, if anything, might lie beyond psyche's archetypes. His Steiner is fundamentally a spiritual researcher, inspiring the active development of soul faculties that can give us conscious access to a realm of differentiated spiritual beings that underlies those archetypes and the world, and is immanent in the evolution of both. Modulating these perspectives, Robert Sardello suggests that trying to go Steiner's way without first, or at least also, going Jung's way, is unlikely to take us where Steiner is pointing; and that one pursuing depth psychology alone easily falls prey to believing that any strong desire we have, because it is of soul, must be good.
The book concludes with three brilliantly clear lectures by Hans Erhard Lauer. Originally published in 1960, and appearing here in English for the first time, they express Lauer's perspective on how anthroposophy enlarges upon and clarifies the findings of depth psychology.—Reviewed by Paul Cash

In Sardello's Foreword, he summarizes Wehr's goal in this extended and perspicacious comparison of the groundbreaking psychologists Steiner and Jung. Like Sardello, Wehr has long been interested in "bringing the soul psychology of C. G. Jung into a relation with the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner." Such a creative synthesis could "give birth to a new psychology—one that is fully cognizant of the spiritual and soul worlds and how human consciousness forms in association with them." While recognizing that Jung and Steiner use different terminology and have different conceptions, Wehr nonetheless recognizes essential interests, concerns, and ends between them. These are found mostly by understanding and analysis, and to some degree deconstruction, of the notions of individuality and its formation and development which were central subjects and concerns of each seminal psychologist. For both Jung and Steiner, symbols and experiences relating to religious beliefs, death, sexuality, and other major factors of human life were of primary importance in human nature and individuality.

In an appendix, Hans Lauer relates the essence of Wehr's synthesizing comparison to anthroposophy in an approximately 40-page essay with an ending section titled "Depth Psychology and Anthroposophy."

With its varied parts of Foreword, text, and appendices, this study of Jung and Steiner is enlightening and absorbing for serious students of psychology and spirituality.

About the Author
Gerhard Wehr was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, in 1931. He is a free-lance author and teaches at the Diakonenschule Rummelsberg in Nuremberg. He is the author of numerous publications in fields such as Christian spirituality, depth psychology, and Anthroposophy. He is also the author of a biography of C.G. Jung.

Robert Sardello, PhD, is cofounder (with Cheryl Sanders-Sardello, PhD, in 1992) of the School of Spiritual Psychology. At the University of Dallas, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, head of the Institute of Philosophic Studies, and graduate dean. He is also cofounder and a faculty member of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as author of more than 200 articles in scholarly journals and cultural publications, and is a former faculty member of the Chalice of Repose Project in Missoula, Montana. Having developed spiritual psychology based in archetypal psychology, phenomenology, and the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner from more than thirty-five years of research in this discipline, as well as holding positions in two universities, Dr. Sardello is now an independent teacher and scholar, teaching all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Australia. He is a consultant to many educational and cultural institutions and a dissertation adviser at numerous academic institutions. He is author of several books, including Facing the World with Soul; Love and the World; Freeing the Soul from Fear; The Power of Soul: Living the Twelve Virtues. and Silence.

Psychology as a Discipline of the Soul

The most insightful book on anthroposophy as a spiritual psychology in print. Wehr's contrast of Jung with Steiner not only highlights the similarities and dissimilarities of Jungian psychology to what psychosophy might be, but also gives the reader a deep insight into Steiner's meaning of self-knowledge (which is the central tenet of anthroposophy).

Most valuable in this book is the brilliantly written Foreward by Robert Sardello, and the Appendix which includes three terrific lectures by Hans Erhard Lauer ('The Riddles of the Human Soul in the Light of Anthroposophy'): a reconciliation of knowledge and faith through individuation.

Sound explorations

This is an intelligent, comparative exploration of the work of Rudolf Steiner and Carl Jung, written by a follower of the first and a biographer of the second. Both were explorers of 'consciousness' and though they both had scientific trainings, they yielded towards the revelatory and the religious in their ultimate views about what it means to be a human being. The territory they traversed in doing so had many parallels, assessed and compared by Wehr, in ways that are mostly helpful, and sometimes illuminating.

Buen Libro Pero Necesita Revisarse

El autor Dr. S�nchez es reconocido por su trabajo en el plantamiento y crecimiento de Iglesias. Este libro describe 10 realidades de los Hispanos que impactan a Am�rica y las implicaciones para la Iglesia. El Dr. Miranda, Sr. Sena, y Diana Barrera colaboraron con un cap�tulo. La mayor�a del contenido es bueno e importante, algunas cosas un poco redundante (las estad�sticas)y las estad�sticas ya han cambiado desde que se escribi� el libro (2a edici�n 2006). El mejor cap�tulo para mi es el 19. Tiene que ver con una encuesta de iglesias Bautistas crecientes. Menciona los elementos que han ayudado a su crecimiento.
En cuanto lo escrito, el libro tiene demasiado errores ortogr�ficos. �Esta es la segunda edici�n y no se arreglaron �stos errores? Adem�s tiene errores de formato. Un cap�tulo comienza en la parte final de una p�gina, las citas tienen errores (divide palabras con guiones) y el formato (t�tulos en las p�ginas, citas) es terrible. Necesita editarse otra vez. El libro en Ingl�s parece que no tiene �stos errores y las gr�ficas son a color. Es muy dif�cil leerlas en blanco y negro.

Uno de los mejores recursos relacionados con el tema que se pueden encontrar actualmente. Los datos que tienen que ver con las estad�sticas est�n un poco atrasados ahora puesto que datan del censo del 2000 y de datos colectados hasta el 2006. Pero aun as�, sigue siendo una herramienta bien documentada e informativa.
