Breathtaking read!

I stumbled upon this book by total accident and set it aside for several months before reading it. I read it in four days! This is the first book I have read by this author, and I now see why it was a bookclub main selection!
The characters are memorable and and "real." They are not perfect-- like all of us, they are flawed-- they all have weaknesses and strengths, and this humanity is what makes them so unforgetable! The three Sylvander sisters are all very unique. Each subplot is fascinating, and the interweaving of the stories of the three sisters gives the book even more excitement for the reader. The passion and pathos of the story-- the pain and triumphs, tragedies and romance, make this novel so endearing and memorable.
Briskin also uses vivid imagery to bring the settings and characters to life in the minds and hearts of her readers. The locations are exotic-- from London to L.A and all the way to the Middle East. The plot is highly involved and truly fascinating. The characters are not stereotypical in that noone is "all good" or "all bad." I felt, while reading this, as if they were part of my family. I laughed and cried for them as they progressed through the story. I literally clapped and cheered in places, and wiped tears from my eyes at others!
Walk, don't run, and find a copy of this book! If you like good literature, you won't be disappointed. I will cherish rereading this book for a lifetime! It's that wonderful!

One of the best books I have read!

I'm only 15 years old but I have been reading romance novels and other books that wouldn't be normally read by a teenager. This book made me cry many a time while I read it which was about four days. This is not unusual but it made me think and it made me realize how much our actions can shape others lives. I loved reading her book and I am hoping to find her other books so I may read them as well. This story has a very good plot and I recommend it to others and maybe if you are a romantic like myself you get pulled into the action and put yourself in their shoes like I did. Because I have such a soft heart I actually experience the pain the character must be feeling in parts of this book. I loved it and hope this review will prompt others to read it.

This is an amazing story of three sisters and their good-times and hardships, It shows how things change in peoples lives and how people can fix these problems, it also shows how life used to be, this is a terrific book and should be revised and given to many romance readers, they'll be sure to fall in love with this book just like I did!

This allowed far more economic activity and produced a higher standard of living than people had ever known―but it created far more ecological disruption.

We are now living in the Anthropocene. The period from 1945 to the present represents the most anomalous period in the history of humanity’s relationship with the biosphere. Three-quarters of the carbon dioxide humans have contributed to the atmosphere has accumulated since World War II ended, and the number of people on Earth has nearly tripled. So far, humans have dramatically altered the planet’s biogeochemical systems without consciously managing them. If we try to control these systems through geoengineering, we will inaugurate another stage of the Anthropocene. Where it might lead, no one can say for sure.

I liked the biographic style this is written in. It gave me a lot of insight into Katherine and her killer(real names were not used). This is a very dark story and gave the feel of the bars and sort of people in them. So many dangers people think are new really have been there all along, this is a cautionary tale. This book also shows how many different sides people can have, we never really know them all. It shows how easily it is to remain anonymous in a big city, how you can hide your darker side. Closing Time is a very thought provoking book.

For those of you who remember the movie with Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, Looking for Mr. Goodbar , also the book by Judith Rossner (I think that was her name) of the same name, you would never forget it. This is the true depiction of the actual crime that was committed back in the 70's before New York city cleaned up its' streets. A haunting story of a lonely woman who wanted to spread her wings in the new coming of age of women breaking free of the stereotypical woman as wife and mother. Of a man who was suffering from an identity crisis also at the apex of his life. Both crossed paths on a night when both were looking for another persons touch late in the night of a time when no one wanted to know each others name. This book, could not put it down. I read it in about 3 days time., A couple of those nights, slept only because I could not keep my eyes open. A fabulous read for those who lilke the drama of true life and death who comes to soon. Fascinating.

My generation remembers the movie "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" as a shocking movie highlighting the dangers of one night stands, who you could be taking home, why we should be careful etc. This book is about the real people and their stories that the movie was drawn from. A lot more in this book to explain the human dynamics that made three people "a perfect storm". One way or another these three main characters were going to be destroyed. Having met just sped up the process. I wish the movie was available on DVD. I'd like to see it again after reading this book.

En 1872, animado por George Meredith tras haber conseguido publicar tres novelas, abandonó la arquitectura para dedicarse a escribir. Under the Greenwood Tree había iniciado ese mismo año el ciclo de “novelas de Wessex”, nombre del antiguo reino sajón que había comprendido las actuales regiones de Dorset y Wiltshire; a este ciclo pertenecen, entre otras, Lejos del mundanal ruido (1874), The Return of the Native (1878) El alcalde de Casterbridge (1886) y Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), además de Jude el oscuro (1895), cuya escandalosa acogida le “curó para siempre”, según sus propias palabras, “de todo interés por seguir escribiendo novelas”.

Su arte se concentró entonces en la poesía, en una serie de volúmenes publicados en su mayor parte después de 1898. Fue autor también de un gran drama épico, The Dynasts (1904- 1908). Hardy murió en Dorchester en 1928.

Looseleaf?

I would buy it again, but I wish that it was stated significantly more clearly that this thing is LOOSELEAF. I opened the package and almost spilled all the pages out on the floor, in which case I probably would have packed it back up and sent it back to these people. How long would it take to reorganize it if you dropped it on the floor? They should at least have something to temporarily hold it together even if it's not a full binder.

I'm glad that they sell it and it is a lot cheaper than most of the alternatives, but there's no way I'd give it 5 stars without some form of at least temporary binding--especially since they don't warn you in the description.

Too much is out of date to recommend

As a nursing instructor I was disappointed on how much of this book is out of date. Many chapters in this 2012 book have references no newer than 2007. A particularly egregious example is the chapter on handheld computers. It uses the out-of-date term of PDA and is about the use of Palm and Windows CE handhelds. The existence of iOS or Android smartphones and tablets is completely missing. A few chapters are updated but it looks like most are not. The book uses a very unhelpful diagram/model to organize the content. Reading this book was like going back in time five years due to numerous outdated references. Writing a nursing informatics text is difficult with technology changing so quickly. The authors did not seem to make much effort to rectify that with this second edition. There are better choices for textbooks on nursing informatics.

Wordy, hard to read

I must say that nursing informatics doesn't much interest me, so that may bias my review of this book. I'm required to take a course in informatics as part of my BSN. Our professor informed us that this was the only textbook on informatics, which was why we were required to purchase it for the class.

I can hardly keep my eyes open every time I try to read a chapter, it's so dry and abstract. It's not that concepts aren't interesting, they actually are. Use of information systems in nursing and the health sciences, is absolutely the wave of the future. And looking at nurses and "information processors" and "knowledge workers" is creative and useful. But the book seems to try and use lofty academic language, big words, passive voice, and overly formal descriptions to describe simple concepts, making the reading boring and abstract. Also, when new terms are introduced, the authors don't plainly define the terms...They give long winded histories of how the terms are used, how they evolved to their current state, and what someone said about the terms, but they rarely come out and say "this is what we mean by this term". So I find that if I really want to know what a term means, I have to translate it into plain words so that it makes sense.

My professor has the previous (2009) edition and had given us study questions from that edition, without realizing that some of the topics were no longer mentioned in the latest edition. So I got online and looked up some of the answers on google books (previous edition). I was surprised to find many of the same concepts discussed in clearer language, with less wordy definitions. Not sure why you would want to take nice clear writing and muddy it all up, but that's apparently what happened. Maybe it didn't sound academic enough?

My motivation for writing a review is to encourage folks to buy the 2009 edition. If you aren't required to purchase the newest edition, I'd consider at least getting the previous edition first...it seems to be a much better read. Or you could get the 2009 edition on kindle and this edition in paper form. I would most definitely not recommend buying this book unless you are required to, or are passionate about nursing informatics and want a more current description of it in book form. But seriously, if we are talking about currency of technology, data, and information systems, why not just use the internet, proceedings of conferences and peer reviewed articles?

Reads like a bad article

This is an awful book. I am truly amazed that the authors were able to make a book so long with so little to say. Like a bad scholarly article, the only interesting points in the book are quotes from other sources. You're probably looking at this book because you have to have it for class, so try to share a copy with friends to lessen the expense.
