This isn't even a 2 star book (Unflattering review full of spoilers)
By Lora905
What book are these 4 and 5 star reviews based on? Surely, not this one!

Strange story about an "enigmatic millionaire bear shifter" (Pat) who apparently has never hidden the fact that he's a shifter from the rest of the world (that's different) that apparently had a nervous breakdown when his first mate was killed and has deemed it best to stay cooped up in his penthouse 24/7. Also, apparently, this mental snap has caused him to run a Craigslist ad every December requesting someone to pose as his dead mate, from head to toe, including hair, clothing, and following a written script. Oh, and having sex. No one ever takes him up on it, until after 10 years, a soldier (Jacob) who's been discharged and is now desperate for money responds to the ad.

For one, this needs editing, mostly for grammar, but also for wording mistakes such as "on the living room" instead of "in"; "on the floor of the bed" (is it on the floor or the bed?)"; and "two jeans" instead of "two pairs of jeans". For two, maybe this would've benefitted from being longer, as there is no character development and it ends so abruptly I wouldn't even consider it an HFN. Another thing that irked me was the partial reveals: in the beginning it stated that Jacob was no longer in the army, but didn't say why until near the end. And the requirements of the contract between Pat & Jacob were revealed piece-meal. Lastly, what reason is there for a relationship to start between these 2 men? Because they're both single & depressed? Pat seems like a bitter, cranky weirdo who needs to seek counseling before getting into any type of relationship, and Jacob needs to get on his own 2 feet so as not to be dependent on another man. I felt absolutely nothing for these MCs.

Mate Wanted for Christmas by Angelique Voisen is a bitter sweet take on a holiday romance. Pat has enough trouble getting up in the morning in the winter. His Grizzly wants to hibernate. But he manages to get up, even though the memories of his lost love drag his heart down all day long. He has placed an ad like he does every Christmas for a person to come spend the holidays with him. Well this year he finally gets a response.
Jacob looks exactly like Pat's dead mate. He replied to the ad because he too did not want to be alone for the holidays. He is a human not a shifter. He is spirited, blunt, and honest. He might have been shot in the military but he does not let life get him down for long.
This is a great start to their relationship. I would love to visit them again and see where they go with everything. Super bittersweet romance that is truly unforgettable.

Five Shooting Stars

Profound Grief
By Deirdre
Deep profound grief has kept a huge Grizzly shifter from moving forward with his life after the death of his beloved mate. Every year for the past several years the Bear has placed an ad requesting an one night stand on Christmas Eve with someone who reminds him of his deceased mate.

It would take a desperate man to respond to such an advertisement. A man with nothing to lose. A man like Jacob. Only grumpy Pat the Bear didn't expect the tough though understanding man Jacob turned out to be.

This is a HFN short story. It would be nice to have a sequel to find out what happens to these two desperate and lonely "men" who seemed to discover a glimmer of hope for the future.

A mystery trapped in time
In 1921, infamous Italian poet Galeazzo D'Ascanio wrote his last and greatest play, inspired by his muse and mistress, actress Celia Sands. On the eve of opening night, Celia vanished, and the play was never performed.

Now, two generations later, Alessandro D'Ascanio plans to stage his grandfather's masterpiece and has offered the lead to a promising young English actress, also named Celia Sands-at the whim of her actress mother, or so she has always thought. When Celia arrives at D'Ascanio's magnificent, isolated Italian villa, she is drawn to the mystery of her namesake's disappearance-and to the compelling, enigmatic Alessandro.

But the closer Celia gets to learning the first Celia's fate, the more she is drawn into a web of murder, passion, and the obsession of genius. Though she knows she should let go of the past, in the dark, in her dreams, it comes back...

Disappointing, Could Have Been Better
By D. Salvagin, La Deetda Reads
This novel is a reissue of a book written in 2001. I’m finding it difficult to come up with an original view on this book. Having read many of Ms. Kearsley’s novels and enjoying them immensely I was disappointed in this offering. The story was so very slow with most of the action and romance coming at the end of the book. There are pages of description that seem repetitious. The plot would have been interesting in a shorter book but the pacing here almost killed my interest in finishing. But I did plow through because even though I found it difficult there is always that seed of something-will-happen-to-change-my-opinion but sorry to say that never happened here. And yet I must give Ms. Kearsley her due accolades; she can write description of place and time beautifully. If you want a truly wonderful Susanna Kearsley book then pick THE WINTER SEA, MARIANA, THE SHADOWY HORSES OR THE ROSE GARDEN all of those are just wonderful.

Intense Romantic Suspense
By Sheri Melnick
In 1920's Italy, Galeazzo D'Ascanio was unable to see the performance of his wonderful play, Il Prezzo. Celia Sands, his beautiful English mistress and star of the play, vanished without a trace the night before the opening performance.
Now, some eighty years later, Alessandro 'Alex' D'Ascanio, grandson of Galeazzo, has contacted Celia Sands, a struggling young English actress, asking that she perform the lead in Il Prezzo, a never performed play. The Forlani Trust is restoring Il Piacere, Galeazzo's magnificent villa on Lake Garda, and the play will be performed at an outdoor theater there.
Celia isn't certain that she should take this role, since it appears that she is desired merely because she possesses the same name as the original Celia. But her mentor, pseudo-guardian and director Rupert does his best to quietly persuade Celia to take this part. And Celia ventures off to Italy and the disquiet of Il Piacere. The maid thinks that Celia's room has ghosts of its own even as Celia seems drawn to Alex whose comings and goings lend an air of mystery to the place. Add to the mix Daniela Forlani, whose possessiveness of Alex alludes to Francesca, Galeazzo's wife, who was jealous of his relationship with Celia.
Written in the first person, SEASON OF STORMS is a top-notch suspenseful novel that evolves into a truly riveting read. The mystery is not in the form of cliffhangers but a more slow-paced discovery of clues that will fall into place like the pieces of a puzzle. Rich with evocatively descriptive language, SEASON OF STORMS will transport you to another place, where murder and ghosts are a distinct probability.

MILDLY SUSPENSEFUL...
By lawyeraau
This is a somewhat tepid book by this award winning author. Perhaps because her other novels are so terrific, this one pales in comparison. While well written, it moves along at a ponderous pace, a lull before the storm that never quite arrives.

The author weaves two stories in one. One is about a turn of the century actress, Celia Sands, who mysteriously disappeared, during a torrid affair with her wealthy, married Italian lover, who wrote a play for her. She never had an opportunity to perform the leading role in her lover's masterpiece, however, due to her untimely disappearance. The main story line is about a present day actress of the same name, though no relation, who is called upon to play the role the first Celia Sands was unable to play.

For this role, Ms. Sands is brought to a villa in Italy, which was once the home of the playwright and now belongs to his grandson, Alex. While there, Celia realizes that there are some strange goings on, but does not know why. All soon becomes clear, though it takes many pages for everything to fall into place. There is really nothing too mysterious in this mildly suspenseful novel.

Those who have read the author's other novels may be mildly disappointed. Newcomers to this author may enjoy it more. Nonetheless, it is still a well written, though somewhat tepid and belabored, novel.

Mrs Hargreaves comes to life
By Pablo
I read this book a few months ago. It is sort of a guilty pleasure and an escape from reality. I fully put myself into James' character and found my heart pounding with fear unlike other books where you analyze from a distance. I suggested to my girlfriend that she read the book and the next thing I know she buys 1880 period clothes and boots (Miss Hargreaves), a beautiful chestnut 140 year old bedroom set, a set of Lochgelly tawses from Scotland, a one meter dragon cane, ropes and straps etc. etc!!! She is a very strict school teacher in real life and I think reading this book has brought out the dominate female in her. Well, I go and visit her and she is immaculately dressed with her hair and nails done looking right out of 1880. I am looking at Mrs Hargreaves! I go along for fun or so I thought since we trust and love each other. I find myself bare, tied up in a most compromising way and tawsed senseless as she played Phantom of the Opera. She says it's the most enjoyable and exciting thing she ever did. Annie Bee seems to really knows her stuff because everything she mentioned happened to me. This book has given me mixed feelings, excitement, a really sore backside and a girlfriend who says she has found her inner self.

Exactly what it says!
By AlexJouJou
A very solid corporal punishment book with above average descriptions. Tawes, canes, paddle's and some sex scenes. Although the punishment is the focus. It is primarily F/m and F/f and it contains exactly what the title says. When you break the rules of your rental you get punished at the birching block.

Tension & Pain

Excellent job creating the fear, anxiety and excitement that arises when you know punishment is coming. One can almost feel the power and the pain in the cane and hellstrap.
Great job!!

A Walk to Remember, by Nicholas Sparks

There was a time when the world was sweeter....when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats.... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister....Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart-and the joy and pain of living. The inspiration for this novel came from Nicholas Sparks's sister: her life and her courage. From the internationally bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, comes his most moving story yet....

Amazon.com Review
In the prologue to his latest novel, Nicholas Sparks makes the rather presumptuous pledge "first you will smile, and then you will cry," but sure enough, he delivers the goods. With his calculated ability to throw your heart around like a yo-yo (try out his earlier Message in the Bottle or The Notebook if you really want to stick it to yourself), Sparks pulls us back to the perfect innocence of a first love.

In 1958 Landon Carter is a shallow but well-meaning teenager who spends most of his time hanging out with his friends and trying hard to ignore the impending responsibilities of adulthood. Then Landon gets roped into acting the lead in the Christmas play opposite the most renowned goody two-shoes in town: Jamie Sullivan. Against his best intentions and the taunts of his buddies, Landon finds himself falling for Jamie and learning some central lessons in life.

Like John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, Sparks maintains a delicate and rarely seen balance of humor and sentiment. While the plot may not be the most original, this boy-makes-good tearjerker will certainly reel in the fans. Look for a movie starring beautiful people or, better yet, snuggle under the covers with your tissues nearby and let your inner sap run wild. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly
Sure to wring yet more tears from willing readers' eyes, the latest novel by the bestselling Sparks is a forced coming-of-age story concerning a pair of unlikely young lovers. In a corny flashback device that mimics The Notebook, 57-year-old Landon Carter spirits himself back to his fateful senior year in high school in Beaufort, N.C., when he was an archetypal troublemaking teenager of the 1950s, changed forever by an unexpected first love. Jamie Sullivan, the Bible-toting minister's daughter, with her drab brown sweaters, spinster hairstyle and sincere, beatific advice, is the obvious target of high school ridicule. Despite conspiring in Jamie's derision, class president Landon, desperate for a date for the homecoming dance, finds himself asking Jamie. Afterwards, Jamie asks him to participate with her in the metaphor-laden school Christmas play (Jamie plays the angel). Landon endures the taunting of his friends and forms an uneasy friendship with Jamie, which is carefully supervised by her father. The teens visit needy orphans, give Oscar-worthy performances in the school play and share dreams watching the sunset. Landon realizes he's in love with Jamie, but, of course, she is hiding a devastating secret that could wring her from Landon's arms forever. Now tortured by his knowledge of what will be her terrible fate, he must make the ultimate decision that catapults him into adulthood. Readers may be frustrated with the invariable formula that Sparks seems to regurgitate with regularity. Although the narrator declares, "My story can't be summed up in two or three sentences; it can't be packaged into something neat and simple that people would immediately understand," this is the author's most simple, formulaic, and blatantly melodramatic package to date. Agent, Theresa Park, Sanford Greenburger Associates. Doubleday Book Club and Literary Guild main selections; 20-city author tour; movie rights optioned by Denise DiNovi at Warner Bros.. (Oct.)

the joy would be gone as well
By Trishula
“There are moments when I wish I could roll back the clock and take all the sadness away, but I have the feeling that if I did, the joy would be gone as well.”

I knew what I was getting myself into when I started A Walk to Remember but I still experienced every heart wrenching emotion known to mankind. Right off the bat, I love how the book was set in the 1950s. It was refreshing to read a contemporary with no trace of modern technology. Compared to the movie, I prefer how Landon and Jamie met in the book. I think Landon’s inner dialogue played a huge part in that. Especially when he fought with himself to either be a good person vs. keeping your image. Every page I turned, I saw his character develop through the influences of Jamie and himself. After I finished, I HAD to watch the movie and what a big difference it was. I definitely saw the movie in a different light.

BEAUTIFUL story, with mesmerizing characters
By sarah_says
"There are moments when I wish I could roll back the clock and take all the sadness away, but I have the feeling that if I did, the joy would be gone as well."

I watched A Walk to Remember back in 2002, I think that was when the movie came out. I loved it the first, second, third, fourth, (well you get the picture) time that I watched it. It was such a moving story, and it was deeply tragic. I was a bit spectical to read the book because a lot of my friends were not fond of Sparks' writing, still, I have a kindle and decided that getting a sample wouldn't hurt. Turns out, it was the best decision that I made all week.

The language is very simple and easy to read. Landon, talks like any other high school senior. He is one of those conflicted characters who knows right from wrong, but is sometimes blinded by peer pressure. This is an aspect I can relate to, as I remember high school being more about what people expect of you rather than discovering yourself. Kids don't like those who are different from them, and they will find a way to make those outsiders know it.

Jamie's character is absolutely charming, and I wished I could have met someone like her back in high school. She is a different kind of nice, as in she doesn't need recognition for her good deeds. A lot of kids will go out of their way to do nice things for others, but they make sure that their deed doesn't go unnoticed. Jamie is nothing like that, she does the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. She doesn't have a negative thought about anyone, and her kindness knows no limits. I know that like Landon, I would definitely be changed by meeting her as well. There is something about her sweet and ever giving essences that touches me, even though she is a character trapped in this story.

This isn't your typical love story where the male and female meet and instantly fall in love, and run into the sunset together. This is a story about struggle, loss, finding and losing yourself, realizing that life is never a guarantee, and learning how to be best version of yourself. It is also learning and accepting that although tragic events will occur in our lives, those events do have a silver lining-they HIGHLIGHT all the blessings that we have neglected in the past.

You know those stories that continue to touch you even after you finish reading the last page? Well, A Walk to Remember is one of them.

The book that influenced and led me to the world of Nicholas Sparks!
By Nicholas Richard Pearson
`A Walk to Remember' is one of those novels that I can unapologetically admit I know inside and out. In fact, this was the first Nicholas Sparks novel that caught my attention, after having viewed the movie of the same name starring Mandy Moore and Shane West. I have forever been a huge Mandy Moore fan and after I watched said movie, I had to get my hands on the book that inspired it. There is no doubt that there is quite some difference between the two, and this is partly due to the nature of the target audience the two formats are reaching out to. However, the foundations of this amazing tale are still the same.
The reason why this novel has touched me so is that I was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, an autoimmune disorder that has affected my bone marrow (in a similar way to leukaemia) at exactly the same age as the lead character, Jamie Sullivan, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Seeing the film really helped me to realise that I was most certainly not alone with my condition and here was something I could relate to. After reading the book, Sparks' novel really helped me to put my life into context and to share my experience with those who have been in similar situations, whilst spreading the word of this rare condition that has greatly affected my life.
The novel itself is based on Sparks' own observations within his family life, and Jamie Sullivan is said to be based on his sister, who went through a similar tale but ultimately passed away. As the preface promises, `first you will smile, then you will cry', which is no bad thing. I am not going to go in to too much detail surrounding the plot of the novel as I believe a lot of people reading this review will either already be familiar with it, and for those who aren't it isn't something worth spoiling. Several themes and messages pervade throughout the book, including a sense of Christian kinship, growing up, forgiveness and, ultimately, love. `A Walk to Remember' is an unforgettable coming-of-age tale that will undoubtedly make you cry, laugh and beg for more.

Hiroshima: Why America Dropped the Atomic Bomb, by Ronald Takaki

The bombing of Hiroshima was one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century, yet this controversial question remains unresolved. At the time, General Dwight Eisenhower, General Douglas MacArthur, and chief of staff Admiral William Leahy all agreed that an atomic attack on Japanese cities was unnecessary. All of them believed that Japan had already been beaten and that the war would soon end. Was the bomb dropped to end the war more quickly? Or did it herald the start of the Cold War? In his probing new study, prizewinning historian Ronald Takaki explores these factors and more. He considers the cultural context of race - the ways in which stereotypes of the Japanese influenced public opinion and policymakers - and also probes the human dimension. Relying on top secret military reports, diaries, and personal letters, Takaki relates international policies to the individuals involved: Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer, Secretary of State James Byrnes, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, and others... but above all, Harry Truman.

Ethnic studies professor Takaki argues that racism and a desire to intimidate the Soviet Union were important factors in the decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan.

I was there, I saw and talked to the people
By A. Pohaku
I totally disagree with Professor Takaki. I am a Japanese American like he is and I was subjected to racial discrimination just after Pearl Harbor perhaps not as much as he had (if he was born then) because I lived in Hawaii and not sent to internment camp. Nevertheless I felt the sting of discrimination. I was a military member of the military intelligence service assigned to ATIS a division of General MacArthur's G2 or Intelligence Section.

We saw many highly classified documents at the headquarters and involved in numerous translations of enemy documents. We were also sent on temporary duty assignment on special missions to the frontline units and engaged in scouting and capturing enemy soldiers and interrogating them. I had experience at the lowest and the highest level. Therefore, I have my own perspective of why the A bomb was dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The casualties for both cities exceeded 210,000 people. The strategic bombing of Japan in six months exceeded 300,000 casualties and millions homeless. Invasion planners stated blockade of Japan chokes but does not kill. The bombing destroys cities but not the army. General Eisenhower agreed. General MacArthur was for the invasion and use of the A bomb for tactical purpose. Subsequent data showed he was wrong.

Operation Olympic the invasion of Kyushu was to be launched in November 1945. I was scheduled to be assigned to the 1st Corps to invade Miyasaki, Kyushu by the 6th Army under Gen. Krueger. The XI Corps to land at Ariake Bay to the South and the Marine V Amphibious Corps to land on the southwestern shore. We would have faced 790,000 Japanese versus our 550,000 troops. Operation Coronet was the invasion of Kanto Plain near Tokyo with an invasion force twice as large as Olympic and scheduled for April 1946.
.
Postwar: I read Ketsugo the Japanese defense plan. The Japanese had not only the kamikaze aircraft, but piloted bombs, piloted torpedoes, suicide speedboats in the thousands, mini suicide submarines and four thousand scuba divers to blow up the troop transports . The beaches were mined, spiderweb network of machine gun nests, hidden artillery behind 50 meter high hills. There were 12700 kamikaze aircraft to be launched from partially hidden runways from underground installations. The Japanese estimated about 50% of our troops to be killed. Our estimate was between 20% and 30% but postwar information revealed it to be much higher. The cave networks were designed from lessons learned in the Pacific war. General Marshall estimated a million Americans would perish. Omaha World Herald in their editorial stated, "These plans that called for the invasion of Japan paint a vivid description of what might have been the most horrible campaigns in the history of man." Prince Fumimaro Konoye said Japan would be a nation without cities. A whole nation and culture would vanish.

The Supreme Council of Japan felt that unconditional meant the elimination of the Emperor. The Emperor also felt that he would be eliminated. President Truman felt less than unconditional would result in future problems if the Japanese armed forces were not eliminated. They may rise again like the Germans. The bomb also saved Japan from being divided into north and south like Korea with Russian participation.

I was one of the first to occupy Japan. I saw caves and caves everywhere and other fortifications. Civilians began to appear two weeks later and I asked what are those caves for? They all said to hide in them and attack us at night. I asked with what? They showed me bamboo spears, bows and arrows, pitchforks, knives, samurai swords, sickles, etc., etc. There were 28 million civilians in a unit called the National Volunteer Combat Force. They were trained in guerilla warfare and attack at night. Women and children ages 15 to 50 were recruited. Everyone I interviewed told me that they will fight for the Emperor and not for the military. They consider him a descendent of God. The history of Japan would show this. This sentiment to save the Emperor was unanimous. Millions of Japanese would have died and that is not counting the suicides expected like in Okinawa. President Truman was concerned with history repeating itself. His decision was based on saving lives both Americans and Japanese and not based on racial prejudice. President Truman and his cabinet although not perfect were honorable men. It is incomprehensible that racial hatred was the basis for dropping the bomb. I was there, I saw and talked to the people. The bomb saved me and my fellow soldiers and millions of Japanese. Takaki is dead wrong including those that said the bomb should not have been dropped. These are people who were not involved and based their conclusions on assumptions and had not read Ketsugo nor saw the fortifications and talked to the people.

This review is concise because of limitation on number of words; otherwise, it would have filled five pages.

The War Could Have Ended Sooner
By Philip Greenspan
Like other GIs I was delighted when I heard the news of the atomic bombing of Japan. Within a year or so several articles appeared that described the deaths and sufferings of the innocent Japanese civilians in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These articles caused many people to have second thoughts as to the wisdom of the decision. In the 70s I read Gar Alperovitz's book, "Atomic Diplomacy", and was convinced the bombing was a mistake. I was shocked by the Smithsonian controversy--an honest portrayal of both sides of the subject could not be shown. During the periods mentioned I was exposed to writers who discussed various aspects, pro and con, of the bombings.
Although I had previously read quite a bit on the subject, I decided to read "Hiroshima" because I wanted to refresh my knowledge of the bombing, I had read a most favorable review of the author, and the book was small--I could read it in a short time.
It was a good decision. The book packs a tremendous amount of pertinent information within its short length. Besides the decision itself it explores factors that might have influenced that decision. These would include: the desire for revenge of Pearl Harbor; to impress Russia and make her more manageable; the racism that existed in Truman and America and was exacerbated by the war; the masculinity factor of a new president who wished to show he was no wimp.
One gets to see that there was considerable disagreement before and after the bombing as to the wisdom of the decision. The dissenters were not a bunch of revisionist historians but many prominent Americans in the military, government, science and the media. The names include Generals Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas McArthur and Admiral William Leahy-many who would be considered conservatives if they were alive today. We can not return to the past to alter that decision, We can only speculate as to what might have occurred. There is evidence that had the Japanese been offered the peace terms that were eventually given them-maintaining the emperor instead of unconditional surrender-THE WAR COULD HAVE ENDED SOONER THAN IT DID. It was unconscionable not to have at least given the Japanese the option to accept an offer of peace--on the terms we subsequently accepted--before considering using the bomb.
If your knowledge of this historic event is limited and you desire to get an overall view of this tragedy read this book.

A real eye-opener
By Zack Davisson
Like many people, I managed to exist my formal schooling knowing very little about the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In preparation for an extended trip to Japan, I wanted to learn a little more about this important event.
Ronald Takaki does an excellent job encapsulating the political climate in the U.S., Japan and Russia of 1945. The death of Roosevelt and the elevation of Truman to the presidency had a profound impact on world events. These presidents had different philosophies concerning the use of atomic weapons, and the world might be a very different place had Roosevelt lived to see the end of the war. Truman and Stalin provided a smooth transition from World War II to the beginnings of the Cold War.
Ultimately, I left "Hiroshima : Why America Dropped the Atomic Bomb" with a better understanding and appreciation of why America decided to use atomic weapons against Japan. Takaki provides motivations for most of the key players, along with supporting evidence. The book is extremely readable, and was as captivating as any novel.
Whether or not dropping the bomb was "good" or "bad" is left up to the reader. Honestly, I have yet to decide.

book a bit dated, heavier reading than most
By 5thSealCatholic
Original heavy hitting book written in the early 80's, that had a huge impact, a bit dated. However, it is neither light nor medium reading.

Heavier reading than I would like on this subject(which I am loathe and rare to say), because he spends pages going into philosophical nuance, explaining detail upon detail before moving the subject along. Also many pages are used either refuting statements or in support of those prominent on the scene of the 80's-both politically and philosophically. More suited to someone with a degree in philosophy who would like a book that stays deep and doesnt mind its era punctuated retorts and supports. For todays reader I would suggest searching for a more up to date, lighter reading on the topic.

And speaking of more up to date books topical to our day:
Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics
by Ross Douthat, "The Naked Public Square" of our time.

One of Chip's Top Ten (wordsntone.com)
By Chip M. Anderson
This book put my faith to the test: Can I be in the world, but not of it? Neuhaus' "naked public square" refers to the public spaces in American life, which are naked or empty because religion and religious values have been systematically excluded from the public arena and from determination of public policy. This book should be given to every politician-does anyone have a few hundred thousand dollars so we can do that? Get the book and learn how you can clothe the naked public square.

Good Fork Cookbook, by Sohui Kim

For more than 10 years, The Good Fork has been one of Brooklyn’s favorite restaurants. It’s a neighborhood spot that offers a rare treat in the crowded, slick New York food scene: a restaurant that feels like home. Chef Sohui Kim and her husband live down the block, blurring the lines between their kitchen at home and the restaurant kitchen. The Good Fork Cookbook is packed with Kim’s recipes for flavorful, globally inspired cuisine that a home cook can make any night of the week. Her influences and techniques range from French and Italian to American and Korean, but every dish is comforting, unfussy: Pork Dumplings; Korean-Style Steak and Eggs with Kimchee Rice and Fried Eggs; Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffles; and more. The Good Fork Cookbook shares the recipes that made The Good Fork Brooklyn’s favorite mom-and-pop shop.

Review
“I believe that deep down inside, every American cook wants to cultivate the delicate touch, thoughtful spirit, and audacious flavors found in Sohui’s cooking. Her distinctive style of combining Korean traditions with contemporary American flavors in such a personal way makes her cooking, her restaurants, and now her cookbook a reference point for all that is good in our food world today.” (Michael Anthony, Executive Chef and Managing Director of Gramercy Tavern and Untitled)

“Just as she has done at her magical Brooklyn restaurant, Sohui Kim has created the most soulful, welcoming book, allowing hungry friends and strangers alike to learn, gather, eat, and celebrate together. The Good Fork Cookbookis at once a story of true love and perseverance, a collection of authentic, imaginative, and tasty recipes, and a spirited example of the modern American dream. The moment I picked it up, I knew it would become an indispensable tool in my kitchen.” (Gail Simmons, food critic, TV personality, and author of Talking with My Mouth Full)

“For years, The Good Fork has been an extension of our kitchen, our family room, and our dinner table. It’s a place that feels like home to us. And now with this book, you can—at last!—re-create Sohui’s incredibly flavorful, soulful, and comforting food in an actualhome.” (Michelle Williams, actor)

“Sohui Kim’s personal geography has inspired an especiallytantalizing fusion of Asian and European food ways. Her colorful and intriguing dishes are intricately explained for the home cook with ample information on finding ingredients.” (Mimi Sheraton, food critic, journalist, and author of 1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die)

“To share one of Sohui Kim’s meals at The Good Fork is to experience the warmth of her affection for foods of all kinds and the heat of her adventurous personality. For a cook, this book is a Where the Wild Things Are romp into the wonderland of Sohui and her carpenter soulmate, Ben. They showed how you can transform a neighborhood with the right combination of food, hard work, and spirit. These stories are great, the recipes even better.” (John Hockenberry, host of The Takeaway on Public Radio International; author of Moving Violations)

“The Good Fork Cookbookis a wonderful collection of warming recipes and stories perfect for the multicultural way we eat, entertain, and live today. So many of my extended restaurant-family members are highlighted in these pages; opening the book feels like coming home. And you all are invited to share.” (Anita Lo, Owner and Executive Chef of Annisa; author of Cooking Without Borders)

"I'm thrilled that Chef Sohui has finally shared her culinary secrets, as well as her story of life as a big-city restaurateur. She brings an elegant, charming sensibility to every recipe she touches, from Korean banchan to buttermilk fried chicken, and all the other dishes that have made The Good Fork (and her backyard parties) the stuff of Brooklyn legend." (St. John Frizell, writer, bartender, and owner of Fort Defiance)

This is a keeper.
By Martha
I've been cooking for almost 50 years, and my family and friends love what I make. I buy lots of cookbooks, and read them before I go to sleep at night. I remember what I read and cook from the keepers. "Meh" ones go to Half-Price Books. I can read a recipe and taste how it will turn out. That said, The Gould Fork arrived today, and I can tell it's going to be a keeper. The flavors are just different enough to be fresh, but oh so flavorful. The stories and photos are charming and really add to my enjoyment. I look forward to cooking my way through this one.

Worth the price.

A fun book that has good recipes. Ingredients are not hard to come by for the most part. A bit of history about the restaurant thrown in for interesting reading.
