Anal Sex Basics is a bright, friendly, in-your-face (so to speak), informative book. Its cheery, approachable and straightforward look and layout make it easy to flip through and get comfortable with. The sections are well laid out, the illustrations are clear and inclusive and the writing is like a letter from a good friend who wants to share some exciting news with you. A bonus is the multiple voices represented in responses to a survey carried out prior to the book’s publication. These tidbits, along with contributions from other experts and explorers, make the reader feel comfortably part of a community. Jansen being the sexpert that she is means this book covers a lot ground, including knowing your body, safe sex, and communication, useful for anyone. But if anal is what you’re curious about, Anal Sex Basics works hard to take the “ick” and fear out of this particular brand of intimacy and replace it with information, joy and pleasure. It succeeds from top to bottom.

Not a deep dive

Buzz relies on its anecdotes and case studies to provide insight and explanation of the topic. The example-ware is interesting enough to keep the pages turning--the book's an easy read--but I was hoping for more. Using a diving analogy, if great business texts were scuba diving, Buzz would be snorkeling. While some of the material was thought-provoking, the text casually cruises around, and never really gets down below the surface.

If you're looking to get an idea of post-Barnum, modern influence marketing, Buzz works. If you're looking for exhaustive analysis of the title material, descriptive techniques, or methods, this may not be the book for you.

As an aside, there are repeated references to the authors' own company, which only detract from the work.

A footnote: The book includes an entire chapter on and shock and negative marketing. By virtue of posting this review, I realize I'm contributing to Buzz' own buzz.

EURO-RSCG MOUTHPIECE, LACKS FOCUS, BUT INTERESTING CASES

When used in the context of marketing, the word "Buzz" usually conjures up connotations of PR or creative activities executed in unprecedented ways, rather than old-school advertising.
That's a notion that the EuroRSCG authors of this book clearly do not share. Everything even remotely within the gamut of marketing is smooshed in to this all-encompassing treatise. No reason, they felt for instance, to leave out traditional creative that successfully carries "shock value" (e.g., voyeuristic ads) and thus by implication, "buzz."
Personally, I was specifically interested in examples of usage of new media such as mobile phones or blogging, but both these issues get abysmally meagre mention in the book. A case of Amnesty International from Netherlands is mentioned regarding the use of SMS. As for blogs, we are recommended, in 2 paltry pages of coverage, to keep ourselves "apprised" with what users around the world may be writing about our brands.
That's a bit like saying corporate governance is crucial for business, so well, keep your accounts clean. Right. How about a conceptual or theoretical framework, or even just a couple of concrete suggestions to actually DO something about it?
While the case studies are occasionally nifty -- e.g., MTV's hold on the spring break season for the youth in US; or Nando's in South Africa which uses creative advertising to position itself against McDonalds and KFC -- the book simply flip-flops all across the board trying to flesh out the fashionable catchet of buzz.
In the absence of any directional guidelines about how to CATALYZE such "buzz," the book falls a bit short of it promised claims. I'd still give it a 3/5 for a pretty interesting marketing read in general, it's just the title that's a bit of a gyp.

Great for predicting the past

"Buzz" has about 10 pages of educational reading. The concept of alphas (also called early adopters) and betas (the buzzing group that copies the early adopters and brags about it to others) is great.

The rest of this book is a waste of time. The authors constantly trot out examples of things that went viral, but don't know enough about it to actually explain how it went viral. They weren't involved in the early planning to identify the alphas, and they don't give good explanations for what exactly made the betas adopt the alphas' ideas, so every anecdote is a smug exercise in predicting the past. "You see," the authors seem to say, "here's an example of something that became viral, which demonstrates we know what we're talking about." It's easy to retrofit your theory to fit an anecdote, but it's lazy and obvious to an intelligent reader.

In the end, an interesting framework followed by a history lesson of things that became viral does not give a marketer enough information to replicate it. And the authors' annoying habit of constantly name-dropping their agency name reveals, I think, what this book was really intended for - a customer giveaway that might generate some buzz for them. I'm not biting. And neither should you.

Brent Knowles is a writer, programmer, and game designer.

He worked at the role-playing game studio BioWare for ten years (Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age), during most of which he was a Lead Designer/Creative Director.

Now he writes full time.

He has been published in a variety of magazines including Neo-Opsis, On Spec, and Tales of the Talisman.

In 2009 Brent placed first in the third quarter of the Writer's of the Future Contest with his story 'Digital Rights'.

Helpful chapter, good advice

Brent is an insightful game designer and this chapter is an exerpt from one of his longer books covering a wider array of topics than scripting alone. If your interest in game development is broader than just scripting, though, I would suggest getting the full-length Lazy Designer books instead, as one of those includes the full text of this scripting chapter.

This chapter introduces an overview of the basics of what a scripting language is, what you can do with one, and some good advice on valuable practices to use while scripting to make games. I am not a game developer, but I do a lot of scripting-type coding using visual basic for applications and, my own experience has a lot of parallels with the topic. I found myself agreeing emphatically with much of the advice given: particularly with respect to use of functions, guidelines/naming conventions, and testing early-and-often.

I have never previously encountered a visual scripting language and this section was a bit harder to follow without being hands-on with the software myself. Which is entirely my own fault because Brent provides the source to get the free software to use! Speaking of which, Brent provides lots of additional reference links throughout the chapter for most topics that he provides an overview of in case the reader wants to learn more.

My only 'disappointment' is that I wish there was a bit more depth given on some of the topics that I am less familiar with. A bit more grounding in object oriented programming would have been nice. And I couldn't help but wish for more explanation of the structure of the syntax used in the example NWN languages, or C#. And I would have loved to have seen a fully developed set of scripting guidelines used by someone like Bioware. But that criticism is somewhat unjust given that this is not a book about scripting, it is a chapter about scripting from a book with a much broader scope. It may even be that the subject is a bit more approachable for beginners because of it. Given that, Brent condenses a lot of useful detail into the chapter and is well worth the read.

This is a great intro to scripting, written clearly using detailed examples. Also appreciate the author's approach toward incremental development.

Informative

The last games I ever coded for were circle MUDs, heavily modified circle MUDs... in fact I designed a custom language system for one and built 10k+ unique rooms in some custom zones... wow, games today were always boggling to me. Grabbed this title, gave it a read... I'm not as intimidated by modern gaming now and think I might have to give coding a 'modern' game just for fun! Pick this title up!!!
